Last week, a delegation of rising leaders from the wider Benelux region explored Munichโs defence ecosystem. ๐๐๏ธ๐ก๏ธ๐
โข Bavaria is one of Europeโs key regions for research and development in the security and defence sector, hosting various leading defence, space and aviation companies, as well as Germanyโs largest drone cluster.
โข With its thriving ecosystem, the Greater Munich area has attracted the largest volumes of Germanyโs defence-tech investments over the past years.
โข Bavarian SMEs and start-ups have benefitted greatly from a pool of talents coming from leading universities and from targeted support by the Bavarian State Ministries. In 2026, the Technical University of Munich and the Bundeswehr University Munich founded a Security and Defence Alliance. Together with industrial partners, they are establishing a interdisciplinary innovation hub for technological sovereignty.
โข Home to the Munich Security Conference, the city hosts the worldโs largest annual gathering of state leaders, diplomats and security experts.
During the programme, practitioners and experts from Benelux and Germany discussed how current security trends, military innovation and civil preparedness shape Europeโs future. ๐๏ธ๐ค๐ช๐ก
โThe schedule โ moving between the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the Bavarian Ministry of Interior, the State Chancellery and various security and defence stakeholders โ highlighted the different layers of security governance. The programme strengthened our ties and provided us with a roadmap for continued cooperation. We look forward to future exchanges that further align our security and innovation strategies,โ said Gerta SHAQE, Secretary General of CSV International. ๐ฑ๐บ
โThe diverse programme taught me a great deal about how Bavaria translates todayโs security threats into concrete policy on the ground. The hands-on mentality of the high-tech defence companies is truly inspiring. In just three days, I gained so much knowledge and insight that I could never have acquired sitting behind my desk in Brussels.โ โ Wannes Heirman, Defence Advisor to the CD&V Group in the Belgian National Parliament. ๐ง๐ช
โIt was inspiring to see how Bavaria is building a strong and dynamic defence technology ecosystem. The discussions provided valuable insights into the regional perspective, the political environment, and the importance of accelerating innovation. Likewise, it was a pleasure to share the Dutch perspective on key priorities and challenges.โ - Claire van Voorst tot Voorst, Policy Officer at the Ministry of Defence of the Netherlands. ๐ณ๐ฑ
