Last week, a delegation of rising leaders from the wider Benelux region explored Munich’s defence ecosystem. 🚀🏛️🛡️🎓

• Bavaria is one of Europe’s key regions for research and development in the security and defence sector, hosting various leading defence, space and aviation companies, as well as Germany’s largest drone cluster.

• With its thriving ecosystem, the Greater Munich area has attracted the largest volumes of Germany’s defence-tech investments over the past years.

• Bavarian SMEs and start-ups have benefitted greatly from a pool of talents coming from leading universities and from targeted support by the Bavarian State Ministries. In 2026, the Technical University of Munich and the Bundeswehr University Munich founded a Security and Defence Alliance. Together with industrial partners, they are establishing a interdisciplinary innovation hub for technological sovereignty.

• Home to the Munich Security Conference, the city hosts the world’s largest annual gathering of state leaders, diplomats and security experts.

During the programme, practitioners and experts from Benelux and Germany discussed how current security trends, military innovation and civil preparedness shape Europe’s future. 🏛️🤝🪖💡

🧭𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐬! 🇧🇪

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting our colleagues from Europe and America for our European and Transatlantic Leadership Retreat. 🤝

Directors and representatives from all over Europe and across the pond met in Brussels for their annual meeting to develop the strategic direction of the European and transatlantic projects of the Hanns Seidel Foundation.

Against the backdrop of profound geopolitical shifts and the ongoing transformation of political systems and societies, our managers and directors reflected upon trends and consequences for their work at the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung, including goal-setting and evaluating the impact, efficiency, and success of projects. 🌍

In their discussions, our leaders put an emphasis on political and strategic communication and new narratives in the context of European trends. 💬

Meetings and background briefings with representatives from the European Parliament, the European Commission, the European External Action Service, private businesses and think tanks, as well as NATO and the German Representation at NATO, provided fruitful input to this reflection process.

Building on strong networks, successful projects, and a great reputation in our project countries, the Hanns Seidel Foundation is well prepared for new and emerging challenges that Europe and the transatlantic community face. Keep up the great work, dear colleagues! 👏

Es war uns eine große Freude, gemeinsam mit dem Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft im Haus der deutschen Wirtschaft in Brüssel über „Bürokratieabbau in der EU – Anspruch und Wirklichkeit“ zu diskutieren. 🤝🇪🇺

🧠📊 Dr. Klaus-Heiner Röhl, Senior Economist am Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft, stellte aktuelle Befragungsergebnisse zu Bürokratielasten aus Sicht der deutschen Wirtschaft vor. Seine Ausführungen machten deutlich, dass Dokumentations-, Berichts- und Nachweispflichten erhebliche Ressourcen in Unternehmen binden und sich auf Investitionsentscheidungen, Innovationsfähigkeit und wirtschaftliche Dynamik auswirken können.

💡⚖️ In der anschließenden Podiumsdiskussion mit Dr. Alexander Hempfing, Europäische Kommission, GD IDEA, Markus Ferber MdEP und Dr. Klaus-Heiner Röhl wurde deutlich: Bürokratieabbau bedeutet nicht einfach, Regeln zu streichen. Entscheidend ist vielmehr, Regulierung kohärenter, verhältnismäßiger und praxistauglicher zu gestalten und unterschiedliche Regulierungsebenen abzustimmen.

🚀📑 Die Diskussion zeigte, dass wirksame Entlastung bessere Folgenabschätzungen, systematischere Evaluierungen, weniger Widersprüche zwischen Rechtsakten und eine konsequentere Digitalisierung der Verwaltung erfordert. Gerade für kleine und mittlere Unternehmen wird sich der Erfolg europäischer Vereinfachungsinitiativen daran messen lassen, ob Entlastung tatsächlich im betrieblichen Alltag ankommt und im nicht produktiven Bereich Personal eingespart werden kann.

🇪🇺🤝 Zugleich wurde deutlich, dass Bürokratieabbau auf mehreren Ebenen ansetzen muss. Europäische Initiativen können wichtige Impulse geben, entscheidend bleibt jedoch auch die Umsetzung in den Mitgliedstaaten. Die Herausforderung besteht darin, unnötige Belastungen abzubauen, ohne die Ziele notwendiger Regulierung zu schwächen.

It was a great pleasure again to contribute to this year’s CEPS Ideas Lab! 🤝

Besides participating in numerous plenary and lab sessions, we were delighted to have the director of our Academy for Politics and Current Affairs, Prof. Dr. Diane Robers, speak on “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆?” 🌐

🧠💡 Prof. Dr. Robers highlighted that 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 are at the core of Europe’s digital influence. It is not enough to develop cutting-edge technology; Europe must also demonstrate consistent implementation and measurable impact. Clear KPIs, regulatory relief for startups, and active showcasing of Europe’s capabilities are key to ensuring partner countries understand the value and reliability of European digital solutions.

💡🚀 Her insights remind us that effective tech diplomacy combines strong industrial capabilities with transparent governance and values-driven strategies — positioning Europe as a trusted global partner in secure, ethical, and innovative digital infrastructure.

🇲🇲 🇹🇭 🇪🇺 In a closed-door session on Europe's strategic choices to face risks from both China and the United States, our country representative in Myanmar and Thailand, Achim Munz, highlighted the trust and reputation Europe enjoys in Southeast Asia — and the untapped potential for cooperation in strategic sectors such as critical raw materials. ⛏️⚡

𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐏𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐬: Members of the Bundestag discussed this week with colleagues from the European Parliament, DIHK, Eurochambres, and BDI the prospects for the German and European economy. 🇩🇪 🇪🇺 📈🏭🏦💼

⚙️🔍 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬:

• Germany continues to be seen as a central growth engine of the EU, but it faces significant 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 (bureaucracy, energy costs, skilled labor shortages). Particularly affected: the hashtag (small and medium-sized enterprises).

• The European economy is growing moderately by 1.4% (Germany is below that). However, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 is increasingly being questioned.

• 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞: the EU’s “bureaucracy omnibus” is seen more as “damage control” than as “relief.”

• 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬: partial collapse of the multilateral trade system and unfair competition; COVID-19 support programmes; rising interest rates; fragmented responsibility at the European level; exchange rate fluctuations and a strong appreciation of he Euro.
