European Parliament Intergroup on LGBTI Rights

The European elections next June will be a pivotal moment for the future of the EU. As we witness the rise of political forces that question basic fundamental rights and democracy, at our strategic meeting at the Parliament in Strasbourg today, we bring LGBTI activists together with politicians from the European Parliament Intergroup on LGBTI Rights to engage on the Europe we want to see.

LGBTI activists Luca Dudits from Háttér Társaság of Hungary and Guglielmo Giannotta from ACET of Italy have both pursued successful campaigns for LGBTI rights in their countries and are ready to mobilise their communities to get out to vote in the elections.

/ The European Parliament continues to fight for the Union of Equality /

🗳✅️ Yesterday, the EP has voted on the Implementation report on the EU LGBTIQ Equality Strategy for the 2020–2025 period.

🗣 In the report, the MEPs call for a reinforced mandate of the Equality and Diversity Commissioner, with a strong focus on the rights of LGBTIQ+ persons, as well a new LGBTIQ strategy after 2025.

📃 The report also calls on the inclusion of all the grounds of s*xual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and s*x characteristics in the EU anti-discrimination legislation.

✍️ It highlights that the EU needs to take a common approach for recognising same s*x marriages and partnerships, as well as to further the work done on Rainbow families, in line with CJEU and ECtHR case law.

🚫 Harmful practicies, conversion therapies and inters*x ge***al mutilations need to be banned - MEPs reiterate.

🌈 Across the political groups, we are sending a clear signal that we will continue our fight for better legislation and its implementation, until they are in place! 💪

🌈✨ Exciting News: Another leap forward for equality! MEPs call on Council to designate hate speech and hate crime as crimes under EU law. 🏳️‍🌈

The LIBE Committee just adopted a draft report to extend hate crime and hate speech to the EU list of crimes. 🇪🇺📜 This isn't just another piece of legislation; it's a crucial step towards fostering a safer and more inclusive Europe for all.

Why is this report so important? 🤔
✨ By recognizing hate speech and hate crimes as offenses under EU law, we're sending a powerful message: discrimination has no place in our society. This move reinforces the commitment to protect the rights and dignity of every individual, regardless of their identity. 🙌🏽🌐

🚨 [CROWDFUNDING ALERT]

Background information:

➡️ In January this year, the Italian government issued a communication urging local authorities to cease the practice of including both names of parents in the birth certificates of children of rainbow families.

➡️ In consequence, in June 2023 in Padua, 27 rainbow families received a letter from the local prosecutor that their birth certificate was to be modified and the non-biological mother to be deleted from it. Three rainbow families (that we know of) are already affected by this removal.

➡️ The response from our community was overwhelmingly positive with demonstrations being organised in Paris, Bruxelles, Berlin, Lisboa, Dublin, London, as well as other non-capital towns. In addition, the Italian le***an and transfeminist NGOs organised an action in front of the Vatican.

➡️ We are now entering into a phase in which the request made by prosecutors will be examined by a Court and hearings will start quite soon - we expect in Mid-September.

For this reason, ELC Eurocentralasian Le***an Community coupled with Associazione Famiglie Arcobaleno, the LGBTIQ+ Families organisation, and decided to launch a crowdfunding to help the concerned families with the legal expenses. This is now a priority, due to the costs that are expected to be substantial.
