“Will I survive this?”

A question that mothers who have just given birth face too often.

Severe bleeding after birth remains one of the leading causes of maternal death worldwide. In rural health facilities, where access to specialised care is limited, the risk is even higher.

But most of these cases are preventable.

At Chikupi, Sister Chola and her team were ready.
From the moment the mother arrived, everything moved fast. She was closely monitored, and thanks to the quick action of trained staff and essential medicines, the bleeding was stopped and her condition stabilised.

Four months later, both mother and baby are healthy.

A happy ending made possible by skilled health workers, timely treatment, and trust at a critical moment.

Through the 🇪🇺-backed SafeBirth Africa initiative, health workers are being equipped with lifesaving medicines, equipment and training to prevent and treat postpartum haemorrhage.

Because a mother’s life should be protected by design, not left to luck. ❤️‍🩹

How do we strengthen global health security?

The European Commission has drafted it’s to do list – and came up with a plan, called the Global Health Resilience Initiative.

Through access & production of medical supplies, better international cooperation and stronger healthcare systems – we are making sure the world is prepared against health threats.

13/05/2026

Perhaps we cannot prevent the next health crisis – but we can prepare for it.

Today, the European Commission adopted the Global Health Resilience Initiative: a commitment to stronger health security, effective international cooperation and a world where no outbreak catches us off guard.

Because no one is safe until everyone is safe. 🌍
