Civic space is shrinking across Europe. Protest, independent media, trade unions and civil society are facing growing pressure – while corporate influence keeps expanding. In a new report for ENoP and our office, Francesca de Benedetti explores why: rosalux.eu/en/2026/shrinking-civic-space-in-the-european-union/

“While cheap renewable electricity capacity expands, consumers are rarely allowed to benefit from it. Electricity prices do not reflect real production costs, but instead serve as a source of profits for producers and retailers.”

[:en]As long as electricity remains organised around private profit rather than public need, expanding renewables alone will not deliver affordable energy in Europe Each new energy shock in Europe is treated as an exception, a crisis that...

Renewables are expanding across Europe – so why do electricity prices remain so high? As long as energy is organised around private profit instead of public need, households stay exposed to recurring price shocks and unaffordable bills.

At one minute past 23:00 in 1945, what remained of the German armed forces signed their unconditional surrender, bringing an end to World War II in Europe — and with it, the collapse of the so-called “Third Reich”.

In the former German Democratic Republic (1949 – 1990) it was celebrated as Day of the Liberation of the German people from Hi**er fascism, emphasizing the special importance of the soviet Red Army. In the Federal Republic of Germany it wasn’t until 1985 that President Richard von Weizsäcker recognized the significance of the day in a landmark speech, calling 8 May “a day of liberation from the inhuman system of N**i tyranny”.

In Russia and other countries in the post-soviet space the “Day of Victory” is celebrated one day later on 9th of May because of the difference in time zones when the capitulation was signed.
