Javier Garat Pérez, President of Europêche, declared: “Given the strategic and highly competitive nature of the tuna market we urge the European Commission to initiate an anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation with a view to impose as soon as possible countervailing measures against tuna exports to the EU”. Mr Garat concluded: “It is not acceptable that countries which are linked to IUU fishing and serious labour abuses benefit from preferential market access; it should be rather the opposite. The EU should work towards achieving a true level playing field between EU produced and third country produced seafood. Autonomous tariff quotas for tuna loins at present are rewarding those who have turned a blind eye towards the sustainability of fish stocks and fair treatment of people

Europêche is the representative body for fishermen in the European Union representing around 45,000 vessels, both artisanal and large scale, 80,000 fishermen and counting 16 member organisations from 10 European countries.

The fishing sector meets with the new Director General of DG MARE

EAPO and Europêche Bruxelles reflected on the consequences of the Covid-19 crisis. Europêche president Javier Garat Pérez emphasised that: “We continue fishing through the crisis to provide sustainable healthy food to the consumers, but the drop in demand and prices has not recovered and the upcoming economic crisis will affect markets and our sector for a considerable time to come”.

On behalf of the industry, EAPO president, Pim Visser invited Ms. Vitcheva: “To visit one of our ports and see all the aspects of the food supply insured by the fishing industry”.

Almost 80% of the fish consumed worldwide comes from sustainable stocks

- Evidence shows that management is the best tool for conservation -

This week, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has unveiled its famous biannual report on the state of the World’s Fisheries and Aquaculture 2020 (SOFIA) that monitors global trends on fish production and consumption with a focus on sustainability . The report brings about good news evidencing an increase of global capture fisheries production and an increase of seafood consumption, while confirming that the vast majority of landings come from biologically sustainable stocks.

We are proud to be part of this project. Fishing is an occupation greatly exposed to safety risks. The safety of our fishermen must be at the forefront of EU efforts to ensure its protection as part of sustainable fishing. Applying safety training works and saves lives.

With this EU ErasmusPlus project we are on our way developing a Virtual Reality for Maritime Emergencies training course. Follow our journey at https://vr-me.eu and subscribe to our newsletter!

EU Biodiversity strategy ignores fisheries management achievements

- The strategy puts at risk European food production -

Daniel Voces, Managing Director of Europêche Bruxelles declared: “Closing off parts of the ocean to fishing actually conflicts with fundamental Sustainable Development Goals such as increasing food security and reducing poverty - both of which require the use of the ocean. We are shocked to read that while fishing would be heavily restricted or closed in protected areas, offshore wind farms will be permitted and even prioritised. The Commission already tried in the past to convert the oceans into a mining extraction site and now wants to transform our seas into the new European energy engine”.

50% more fish at sea in only ten years !

- Overfishing in the EU is at an all-time low -

Managing Director at Europêche Bruxelles, Daniel Voces, declared: “The news on sustainable fisheries is unequivocally good. The majority of fish stocks in the North-East Atlantic are healthy and thriving. That’s thanks to many years of sacrifices being made by the EU fishing fleets and intensive collaboration with scientists and public authorities to improve fishing practices and fisheries management. Overfishing in the EU is at an all-time low”.
