On Saturday, Counsellor Johanna Taylor represented the Australian Embassy at the 82nd Tank Ceremony in Antwerp, commemorating the 82nd anniversary of the Liberation of Antwerp.

Together with local authorities, veterans, and community members, we honoured the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for peace and freedom during the Second World War. Through commemorative activities, including a wreath-laying ceremony, we paid tribute to all who served and helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today.

Lest we forget. 🇦🇺🇧🇪

his week our Deputy Head of Mission attended a commemoration in Kersbeek, honouring the lives of three Allied airmen who lost their lives there during the Second World War.

Among them was Australian Sergeant Neville Charles Holdaway, who lost his life alongside British Sergeant Keith Lash Matthews and Flight Sergeant Harry Thompson from New Zealand, when their Wellington bomber crashed into the fields of Kersbeek on the night of 24–25 August 1942. In the moments before the crash, Flight Sergeant Thompson managed to steer the aircraft away from the residential area, protecting civilians on the ground. We reflect on his actions and the courage of the entire crew as a testament to their service and sacrifice.

We honour their memory and remember all those who gave their lives during the Second World War.

Thank you to the Organising Committee and the people of Kersbeek for a very warm welcome.

🏑 A great day out supporting Australian hockey!

Colleagues enjoyed an afternoon of hockey in Belgium on Sunday, cheering on the Australian men's hockey team, the Kookaburras, as they secured a convincing victory at the Hockey World Cup.

Congratulations to the Kookaburras on a strong performance and an impressive AUS 3 - IRE 1 win.

Good news for the Great Barrier Reef 🪸, good news for the ecosystem 🌊.

The World Heritage Committee recently recognized Australia’s ongoing work to protect the world’s largest coral reef system, including action on climate change, water quality, sustainable fisheries and Crown-of-Thorns Starfish.
Australia continues to share its world-leading reef management and restoration expertise internationally to support global efforts to protect coral reefs.

This includes sharing knowledge and tools developed through the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program, one of world’s largest programs to develop and deploy large-scale climate adaptation projects on the Reef.
As climate change remains the biggest threat to coral reefs worldwide, international collaboration and innovation will be essential to protecting reefs for generations to come.

🇦🇺 Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy MP recently visited Ankara for the 36th NATO Summit, participating in discussions as part of Australia’s engagement as an Indo-Pacific Partner (IP4), alongside the Republic of Korea, Japan and New Zealand.

During his visit, Minister Conroy paid his respects to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Türkiye, at Anıtkabir, met with NATO allies and partners on the shared security challenges that increasingly transcend geographic boundaries, and held discussions with defence industry leaders.

The NATO Summit provided a valuable opportunity for Indo-Pacific partners and NATO allies to come together, exchange perspectives and strengthen cooperation on issues affecting global peace and security. By working together within and across regions, we can help build a more stable, secure and resilient world.

The visit was supported by Australia in Türkiye and Australia’s Mission to NATO.

We thank Türkiye for hosting a successful Summit and for its warm hospitality.
