Euromontana "Our mountains are territories with a future and opportunities for Europe" « Nos montag

We assert that Mountains are distinctive areas of Europe, because of their altitude, their slopes, their population density, their challenges and their oppportunities, and consequently should be adressed specifically. Nous affirmons que les montagnes sont des espaces originaux en Europe, par leurs altitudes, leurs pentes, leurs densité démographiques, leurs défis, leurs promesses et qu'à ce titre, elles doivent être traitées spécifiquement.

📢New position paper just released! 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀?

While the EU is debating its future budget priorities, our new position paper highlights what is needed for the EU Livestock Strategy to support the sector in mountain areas 🏔️

The Strategy, announced in the State of the Union 2025, should:
👉Secure a bright economic future for mountain farmers
👉 Ensure territorial and production diversity as a foundation for resilient livestock systems
👉 Recognise the specificities of mountain agriculture and treating territorial diversity as a strength
👉 Supports environmental sustainability
👉 Ensure resilience to crisis: a socially just livestock sector and generational renewal.

And that's a wrap for the first Euromontana Board of Directors meeting of the year 🇮🇹

Last week, the Board members examined the development of the network and reported on ongoing activities and plans for the coming months, as well as the network's advocacy priorities!

🏔️ The day also included a tour of the Università della Montagna premises, (who are kindly hosting the meetings) and meeting with Luca Masneri, the Mayor of the Commune of Edolo.

We had the pleasure to hear presentations from B.I.M. del Sarca President, who act to safeguard the rights of mountain communities by providing compensation for the hydroelectric development of the River Sarca and its tributaries, as well as from CALRE (the Conference of European Regional Legislative Assemblies), presenting their annual priorities 💡

A lot of food for thought here, so stay tuned!

🇮🇹 Live from Edolo were Euromontana's Board of Directors is gathering for its first meeting of the year!

Yesterday, the group reached the 3,000 m to witness the impact of climate change on tourism and on the Presena glacier, explained by Consortia Pontedilegno-Tonale, and then learned about the alteration of the alpine ecosystem from Stelvio National Park and Adamello Regional Park🏔

👉Fauna, flora and local communities are affected by the shorter period of snow cover, which disturbs the habitats and physiological clocks of species, as well as the availability of water, predation cycles and the cultural landscape.

In the afternoon, the visits continued with the FerroMiners (Miniera Ferrominers), who are bridging the diversification of tourism activities in the valley through the revitalisation of historical iron mining sites⛏️

A big thanks to our member Università della Montagna for the organisation 👏

🌍 This International Mother is a reminder that protecting our planet depends on collective action – and mountains are central to that effort.

🏔️ Mountains are more than landscapes. They provide water, food and medicine, regulate the climate and sustain key crops and livestock. They are home to about 1.2 billion people and are centres of cultural diversity and traditional knowledge.

🌟At the Mountain Partnership, we know that what happens in mountains affects us all. Members work together to share knowledge, support mountain communities on the ground, enhance resilience in fragile ecosystems and advocate as one mountain voice in global processes.

➡️ This Earth Day, collective action means focusing on what delivers impact:
🌱 Strengthening scientific cooperation, data collection and monitoring to inform evidence based action
✅ Scaling up initiatives that strengthen the sustainability and resilience of mountain communities and ecosystems
🌿 Fostering sustainable and resilient livelihoods and agrifood systems in mountain regions
🤝 Empowering Indigenous Peoples, women and youth through inclusive participation and decision making
🗣️ Enhancing coordination and advocacy to ensure mountains remain visible in global and national processes

🚀 Together, let’s accelerate progress on the with the aim of strengthening the contribution of resilient mountain ecosystems and communities.

Today, Euromontana had the pleasure to take part in the journalist training course “Transizione ecologica nelle aree montane: biodiversità, cambiamento climatico e sviluppo sostenibile”, organised by Università della Montagna with the Ordine dei Giornalisti della Lombardia (the Lombardy Association of Journalists 📰)

The course, bringing together 65+ participants, focused on how to better understand and report on ecological transition in mountain areas, from biodiversity and climate change to sustainable development ⛰️

👉This matters because the way mountain areas are reported shapes the way they are understood and, ultimately, the way they are governed!

We were pleased to join our member UNIMONT in this exchange. Prof. Anna Giorgi highlighted the need to change the way mountain areas are perceived, beyond fragility and marginality. Stefano Sala then showed how issues such as depopulation, winter tourism, climate change and public policy require a more nuanced reading of mountain realities 🔍

For Euromontana, Guillaume Corradino brought a European perspective to the discussion. He stressed that :
1️⃣ mountains are not Europe’s margins, but diverse and complex living territories, and
2️⃣ stronger place-based policies and European cooperation are needed to move from recognition to implementation.

Thanks again for the organization, the opportunity, and to all the participants 👏

📍 We were, together with agricultural, agri-food and institutional stakeholders at the "Rencontres des produits de Montagne" , with a shared aim: to give fresh momentum to the promotion of mountain products in France.

Organised by Association ALTITUDE, the event was held as part of the relaunch of the Mountain Product logo in France as a collective and structuring tool for mountain value chains ⛰️

Some key insights:
1️⃣ Mountain products clearly benefit from a positive image, showed the results of a consumer study run and presented by our member CNIEL. Yet, more public supports are needed to enhance the value of mountain dairy production.
2️⃣ Romania was highlighted by the Agenția Națională a Zonei Montane as a good example of uptake of the optional 'Mountain Product' quality term. With ongoing state support, it is carrying out effective registration and promotional initiatives for mountain products.
