🇪🇺 The self-determination of Europe’s peoples is built from the bottom up. The local level is the first school of collective empowerment.

✊ Last weekend, in the event “Shared Sovereignty”, we shared strategies to build democracy from the local level with participation from Catalonia, Corsica, Euskal Herria, Galiza and Ireland.

Today, on Europe Day, we celebrate not just a union of states, but a union of peoples 💜

From the perspective of the European Free Alliance, Europe’s strength lies in its diversity — its nations, regions, and stateless peoples, each with their own language, culture, and identity.

Europe was built on the promise of peace, democracy, and solidarity. But these values must apply to all peoples equally including those still striving for recognition, autonomy, and the right to decide their own future.

A truly democratic Europe is one where diversity is protected, not suppressed. Where minority rights are guaranteed. Where self-determination is not feared, but respected.

On this day, we reaffirm a vision of Europe that is closer to its people inclusive, decentralised, and united in its diversity.

Happy Europe Day 🇪🇺

🏝️ European islands are the the frontline of climate change. Island territories are resilient and adapting to the consequences global warming. European funding and policy frameworks play a key role.

🤝 The EFA Island's Forum recently met to share local resilience strategies and good practices developed in different island territories across Europe. Island voices in EFA are calling for stronger EU climate action, fair funding, and recognition of the specific vulnerabilities of the islands.

25th April is a date that echoes across Europe, but not with a single meaning. It is a reminder that democracy, identity, and self-determination have always been contested, and still are today 🌹

In Portugal, it marks the 1974 Revolution, when people overthrew dictatorship and reclaimed democratic sovereignty 🌹

In Italy, it is Liberation Day, commemorating the fall of fascism and the restoration of democracy. But today the Italian state still faces a lot of centralisation, sidelining regions and the people ⛓️‍💥

In the Valencian Country, 25th April recalls 1707, when the Battle of Almansa led to the abolition of historic rights and institutions, and the beginning of a long struggle for cultural and political recognition within the Spanish state 🍊
From Lisbon to Rome to Valencia, one reality connects these histories: Europe has been shaped by struggles over democracy, centralisation, and the right of peoples to decide their own future.

This is not only memory, it is continuity ✊

The Valencian people continue to defend language, identity and self-government. Portugal and the Italian state remind us that freedoms can be won, but also gradually eroded if they are not actively protected.

A democratic Europe must recognise this truth: diversity is not a threat to unity: It is its foundation 🇪🇺

Freedom, democracy and self-determination are not completed projects. They are ongoing political responsibilities.

Today marks the commemoration of the , a moment of remembrance for the lives lost and the enduring impact on Armenian identity, culture, and history.

This day is not only about looking back, but also about reflecting on how historical trauma continues to echo in the present. For many Armenians, remembrance is closely tied to concerns about cultural survival and the protection of heritage sites.

Recent reports from ( ) regarding the demolition of the Holy Mother of God Cathedral in Stepanakert have intensified these concerns. Cultural heritage advocates argue that the loss of such structures goes beyond physical destruction, touching on questions of memory, identity, and continuity.

Whether viewed through a historical or contemporary lens, today is a reminder of the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage and ensuring that the past is neither forgotten nor erased.

On , when we celebrate books, culture and the exchange of ideas, Catalonia reminds Europe of the power of voices, identity and diversity 📚🌹

For the European Free Alliance, the must ensure a EU that works for all its territories. We presented a book to the Commissiner Raffaele Fitto with tailored solutions, decisions closer to citizens, and 600+ signatures from our local and national representatives.

Because Europe, like Sant Jordi, is about people, culture and connection
and it is not built from the top down, but from its regions
