The new EU Anti-Corruption Directive enters into force today: common rules, clearer offences, tougher sanctions and stronger prevention across all Member States. Europe is defending citizens, honest businesses and public money from those who abuse power. As European Democrats, we stand for a Union where transparency is not optional and the rule of law is not negotiable. Corruption weakens democracy. Europe is choosing to fight back.

In one minute: Armenia and Kosovo heading to the polls, South Korea voting too, António Costa in the Western Balkans, Turkey’s opposition under pressure, and Italy celebrating 80 years of its Republic. A lot? Absolutely. But that is Europe: watching, choosing, reforming, standing up for democracy — with a smile and a stopwatch. Democracy is not background noise. It is the headline.

On 1 June, Pride Month begins. From Stonewall onwards, LGBTQIA+ people have occupied streets worldwide not to ask for permission, but to be fully who they are. Pride proves that visibility wins rights, and that silence loses them. Freedoms won yesterday are not guaranteed tomorrow. As European Democrats, we stand for a Europe where everyone can occupy every space: public, political, European, human. No step back. No closet. No fear.

In Malta, the vote for small and independent parties has grown compared with the 2022 general election. Momentum came first among them: a strong result in a political system still dominated by two major parties and designed to make every breakthrough brutally difficult. This is a solid basis ahead of the next European elections to win a historic seat and give Malta a new democratic voice. Congratulations to Momentum: onwards.

Senator Jon Ossoff’s words cut through the noise: America’s greatness is not blood, ancestry or exclusion. It is the promise that free people can choose dignity over domination, rights over fear, union over hate. We love that America: Lincoln’s courage, Kennedy’s call to service, King’s dream, the restless faith of a republic built to widen freedom. Trump, Vance and Miller betray that promise. But the real America is not finished. It is rising again.

President Aleksandar Vučić has asked the judiciary to move against N1, Serbia’s main independent broadcaster, because it did its job: informing citizens live from Novi Sad. This is not rule of law; it is power trying to silence scrutiny. When a president treats journalists as enemies for showing reality, democracy is already under attack. Serbia’s European future cannot be built on threats and obedience, but on facts, free media and institutions that serve the law, not one man.

A new report by the French Défense & Climat Observatory highlights how climate disinformation is increasingly being used to undermine democratic institutions, polarise public debate and delay Europe’s green transition. Between 2023 and 2025, climate-related narratives accounted for 7.7% of all disinformation identified in the EU. For the EDP, defending science and facts means defending democracy itself against manipulation and foreign interference.

Rome Pride was born to promote rights, not to exclude for identities related reason. Excluding therefore Keshet Italia and Keshet Europe, Jewish LGBTQ+ associations is a disgrace. One can condemn Hamas, defend Israel’s security, demand protection for Palestinian civilians and still refuse a collective blame. A Pride that excludes Jews betrays Pride itself: rights are not selective, and inclusion cannot stop at the border of disagreement.

Lukashenko’s words about Giorgia Meloni expose authoritarian politics: women can win, rule and decide, yet strongmen still call leadership a burden “for a woman”. Let us be clear: Giorgia Meloni is certainly no friend of ours. But sexism is never acceptable, not even against political opponents. Europe must answer firmly: equality is not a concession. It is power, democracy and freedom in action. As European Democrats, we stand against regimes that fear women in power.

Hungary’s €16.4bn EU comeback proves one thing: Europe’s rule-of-law conditionality works when it is defended without shortcuts. Under Viktor Orbán, funds were frozen because corruption and democratic backsliding had a price. Under Péter Magyar, reforms must now be real, measurable and independently verified. European money is for citizens, regions and growth — not for oligarchs, propaganda or power networks. That is the deal: no values, no funds; real reform, real recovery
