European Committee of the Regions

European Committee of the Regions The Committee of the Regions is the EU's assembly of regional and local representatives coming from all 27 Member States.

Read our Moderation Policy here: https://link.europa.eu/wcHKCq Established in 1994, the CoR was set up to address two main issues. Firstly, about three quarters of EU legislation is implemented at local or regional level, so it made sense for local and regional representatives to have a say in the development of new EU laws. Secondly, there were concerns that there was a widening gap between the p

ublic and the process of European integration; involving the elected level of government closest to the citizens was one way of closing the gap. Its 329 democratically elected members represent the sub-national level (i.e. regions, counties, provinces, municipalities and cities) and ensure that the communities they represent fully participate in the EU's decision-making process. The European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council are obliged to consult the Committee in policy areas affecting regions and cities. more information:

“The Alpbach Forum is a place for thinking, debating, and hiking together.

We politicians, together with scientists, NGOs, businesses – people from different generations – are finding ways in which we can all reach the summit.

Each of us are advancing at our own pace, finding our unique path, and supporting each other along the way.”

Kata Tüttő shares the meaning of local and regional leaders’ participation in European Forum Alpbach (EFA).

The “Euregio Days” were packed with events from a “Walking dialogue” with EU councillors to the ceremonial welcome and a keynote speech at the Euregio Summit with commissioner Magnus Brunner.

🫶 Never underestimate the importance of a city, a town, or a small village!

It is in the communities we live in that we enjoy our freedoms and exercise our rights. Defending democracy cannot begin anywhere else but here.

Local politics matter, and if you want to have a say in them, you should never be afraid to speak up.

Most of us use the same social media platforms, search engines and AI tools every day without thinking about who builds them, who sets the rules, or where our data goes.

Digital sovereignty is about ensuring Europe can develop trusted alternatives that reflect its values: democracy, rule of law and openness.

Catch up on the workshop "Beyond Big Tech: Shaping Europe's Digital Future" to explore how European social media platforms, AI solutions and digital technologies can help create a healthier and more resilient online ecosystem:

Young women are already shaping their communities and contributing to local leadership across Europe.
Yet too often, their experiences and participation are not reflected in the data.

To help close this gap, the European Committee of the Regions, in partnership with the Socjologia Życia Publicznego is launching a new research programme on young women's participation in local and regional politics.

By gathering better evidence and understanding the barriers young women face, the initiative will help strengthen the Committee's work on gender equality, youth engagement and democratic participation.

Because building more inclusive democracies starts with making everyone visible.

🎥 Watch the reel and join us in closing the gap.

Disinformation does not spread in a vacuum. According to Olga Aivazovska, head of the Ukrainian civil society network Громадянська мережа ОПОРА, it becomes most effective when communities are divided and disconnected from one another.

Drawing on Ukraine's experience, she explains that social cohesion, unity, and open communication between people with different views are essential tools in resisting false narratives.

When dialogue breaks down, disinformation fills the gap. When communication continues, societies become stronger and more resilient.

🇪🇺🇺🇦 A collective effort from European cities to protect and help Ukrainian children.

Several local communities have answered the call and joined the call to host summer camps for Ukrainian youth. Children from war-torn cities like Bucha have found peace and rest there.
