Brussels Conservatory Library - EhB

The library's collection is one of the most important in Belgium, and enjoys a worldwide reputation. Ph. E. Bach, J. W. Hertel and G. Telemann.

Music of the 17-18th centuries is well represented, as well as Belgian music. All content and images on our page come from our collection. The library of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels was founded in 1832, and now possesses a collection of around one million volumes. The collection consists mainly of scores, but also contains books about music, reference works, periodicals and illustr

ations. The collection is one of the most important in Belgium, and enjoys a worldwide reputation. Music of the 17th and 18th centuries is particularly well represented, partly owing to the purchase of two private collections; those of Westphal and Wagener. The collection of the German musician Westphal was bought in the middle of the 19th century by Fétis, then director of the Royal Conservatory. This collection contains mainly German music of the 18th century, including manuscripts by C. At the beginning of the 20th century Alfred Wotquenne, the librarian at the time, acquired the Wagener collection. This collection consist mainly of German and Italian chamber music from the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1929 the Sint-Goedele Fund was acquired. This is an important collection of about 450 manuscripts of religious music from the collegial church of Saint Sint-Goedele in Brussels, now Saint Michael's cathedral. Both Italian composers and local masters such as Brehy, De Croes, Fiocco and Van Helmont are well represented. The following collections also deserve mention:
-de Glimes', with Italian vocal music from the 18th century;
-Hollenfeltz', with documents concerning Mozart father and son;
-Piron's, with French chamber music in manuscript and printed form from the second half of the 18th century;
-Michotte's, with personal documents of Rossini. The library builds on this historic collection with an acquisition policy which pays particular attention to contemporary music. Advances in library science are also followed carefully; for example up-to-date standards are followed for the description of titles, and the recent catalogue can be consulted online.

1 September the first day of school.

[NL] Ook 100 jaar geleden was 1 september een ambitieuze aangelegenheid, want de school was de plek "waar 't verstand in vrede kan groeien en 't gemoed kan openbloeien". En dat was niet alleen "voor de school", maar ook "voor 't leven". Eigenlijk is er niets veranderd.

[EN] Even 100 years ago, 1 September was an occasion filled with high hopes, for school was the place ‘where the mind can grow in peace and the spirit can blossom’. And that was not just ‘for school’, but also ‘for life’. In fact, nothing has changed.

A fascinating acquisition.

[NL] Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog verbleef de Belgische pianovirtuoos Arthur De Greef in Londen. Daar componeerde hij voor Glady Richard een 'Étude en mi, n° 5'. Recent konden we het autograaf van dit werk verwerven.
Verder onderzoek moet nog uitwijzen van wie de vingerzettingen zijn: van de virtuoos zelf of van Glady. Hetzelfde geldt voor de coupures. Mochten die van Glady afkomstig zijn, dan lijkt het er alvast op dat zij iets minder virtuoos was dan onze Arthur.

[EN] During the First World War, the Belgian piano virtuoso Arthur De Greef was staying in London. Whilst there, he composed an ‘Étude in E, No. 5’ for Glady Richard. We were recently able to acquire the autograph manuscript of this work.
Further research is needed to determine who wrote the fi*****ng: the virtuoso himself or Glady. The same applies to the cuts. Should these have been made by Glady, it would seem that she was somewhat less of a virtuoso than our Arthur.

The book that gives your life a new dimension.

[NL] Een boek over de zangkunst uit 1756 is op zichzelf al bijzonder. Maar in ons exemplaar vond een lezer ooit aanleiding om een prachtig oordeel in de marge te schrijven: “Een excellent werk dat me de smaak van de zang gegeven heeft.”
Meer impact kun je als auteur toch nauwelijks wensen. Had iedere publicatie maar zo’n lezer.

[EN] A book on the art of singing from 1756 is remarkable in its own right. But in our copy, a reader once felt compelled to write a wonderful comment in the margin: ‘An excellent work that has given me a taste for singing.’
As an author, you could hardly wish for a greater impact. If only every publication had a reader like that.

Solar eclipse on 12 August.

[NL] Lukt het niet om naar Groenland, IJsland of Spanje te reizen voor de zonsverduistering? Geen nood: de muziekwereld heeft een waardig alternatief. Je kunt de verduistering zelfs opluisteren met een vierhandige polka. Vergeet alleen niet eerst het licht aan te doen, anders wordt het met al die verduistering wel erg lastig om de noten te lezen.

[EN] Can’t make it to Greenland, Iceland or Spain for the solar eclipse? Don’t worry: the music world has a worthy alternative. You can even accompany the eclipse with a four-handed polka. Just don’t forget to switch the lights on first, otherwise with all that darkness it’ll be rather tricky to read the music.

The journey of a musical score.

[NL] Niet alleen mensen maken wereldreizen, ook partituren trekken de wereld rond. Deze aria zag het licht in Parijs, vermoedelijk kort na de Franse première in 1824. Vervolgens belandde ze in Glasgow, bij de ‘Society of Musicians’. Hoe de partituur daarna in New York terechtkwam, blijft een raadsel, maar sinds enkele maanden is ze weer terug in Europa, ditmaal in Brussel, in de Conservatoriumbib.

[EN] It is not only people who travel the world; musical scores also make their way around the globe. This aria first saw the world in Paris, presumably shortly after its French premiere in 1824. It subsequently ended up in Glasgow, at the ‘Society of Musicians’. How the score then found its way to New York remains a mystery, but for the past few months it has been back in Europe, this time in Brussels, in the Conservatory library.

Summertime.

Need stamps for your postcard?

[NL] Een vakantiegroet versturen met een kleurrijke postkaart én een bijpassende postzegel is een traditie die stilaan verdwijnt. Zonde, want wij botsten op een zeldzame reeks postzegels. Toegegeven: ze zijn compleet ongeldig. Maar dat maakt ze niet minder leuk.

[EN] Sending summer holiday greetings with a colourful postcard and a matching stamp is a tradition that’s gradually fading away. It’s a shame, because we’ve stumbled across a rare set of stamps. Admittedly, they’re completely invalid. But that doesn’t make them any less fun.

‘What people want these days is sport, sport and more sport’.

[NL] De dichter Jacques Ballings neemt geen blad voor de mond. In zijn gedicht uit de jaren 1920 ‘Sport’ geeft hij een verrassend actuele kijk op het fenomeen sport. De Vlaamse componist Remi Ghesquiere zette de tekst op een aanstekelijke melodie. Het resultaat? Een charmant staaltje muzikaal vermaak, helemaal in de sfeer van de titel van de reeks ‘Liefde en leute’.

[EN] The Flemish poet Jacques Ballings does not mince his words. In his poem ‘Sport’ from the 1920s, he offers a surprisingly topical perspective on the phenomenon of sport. The Flemish composer Remi Ghesquiere set the text to a catchy melody. The result? A charming piece of musical entertainment, perfectly in keeping with the spirit of the series’ title, ‘Love and Fun’.

Today World Chocolate Day.

[NL] Componisten houden niet alleen van chocolade, ze schrijven er ook muziek over. Dat is ongetwijfeld de lekkerste muziek die er bestaat, bovendien zonder calorieën. Maar er zijn ook uitzonderingen: niet iedereen wil bloemen of chocolade. Gelukkig kennen we ook die nuance dankzij de muziek.

[EN] Composers don’t just love chocolate; they also write music about it. That is undoubtedly the most delicious music ever composed, even calorie-free. But there are exceptions: not everyone wants flowers or chocolate. Fortunately, music allows us to appreciate that nuance too.
