On 21 August 1968, the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia, violently putting an end to the period of liberalisation and democratic reform known as the Prague Spring.

Seeking to rehabilitate the actions of the Soviet Union, Russia is now attempting to whitewash the brutal invasion which killed and wounded hundreds by redefining the reforms as ‘western provocations’.

Firefighting teams and helicopters are being sent where they are needed the most through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

EU earth observation system Copernicus is supporting the emergency services through rapid and reliable geospacial information.

The EU intends to significantly expand sanctions against Russia ​in the coming months, EU ‌High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas tells German newspaper WELT: "EU sanctions have already ​cost Russia dearly, depriving ​Russia's war machine of over €1 trillion ($1.16 ⁠trillion) and for autumn I ​am putting forward the most ​far-reaching sanctions listings since the start of the war".

The Western Balkans and Ukraine hold many of the critical raw materials Europe needs.

These resources could bolster the EU’s economic security and help accelerate enlargement.

⛏️ But Europe must show that its interest in the region goes beyond extracting raw commodities.

To avoid perceptions of a (neo-)colonial approach, the EU needs to invest in local value chains, ensuring that more of the economic benefits remain in the region, while promoting strong environmental, social and governance standards. 🌱

Critical raw materials can support both Europe’s economic security and enlargement, but only if partnerships are built on mutual benefit. 🤝
