A recent article by 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀 in the 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗮𝘁𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 highlights the important work of the 𝗘𝗨𝗦𝗔𝗟𝗣 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹, which brings the perspectives of young people into the political dialogue of the Alpine macro-region.
Representing seven countries and 48 regions, EUSALP provides a unique framework for cooperation across borders. Within this framework, Youth Council members contribute through policy recommendations, events and participation in EUSALP governance structures, ensuring that the concerns and aspirations of younger generations are heard.
From climate change and water management to civic engagement and democratic participation, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄.

🌟 SmartCommUnity is a REGIOSTARS finalist — and we need your vote! 🗳️

What does a smarter, greener and more connected future look like for Europe’s rural and mountain communities?

Over the past three years, SmartCommUnity, an Interreg Alpine Space project, has brought together partners across six Alpine countries — Slovenia, Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland — to tackle the rural-urban digital divide through practical, community-led solutions.
SmartCommUnity’s ambition has been simple: make digital transformation work for people and territories, from the bottom up 🏔️💡

And that ambition has translated into concrete action across the Alpine region:
🥕 Slovenia: blockchain traceability connecting more than 100 local farmers directly with consumers.
📱 Germany: local citizen apps and interactive community hubs helping bridge the digital gap.
🚌 France: integrated rural mobility centres addressing territorial isolation.
⚡ Austria: a shared LoRaWAN sensor network across 15 Tyrolean municipalities to monitor municipal energy use in real time.
🤖 Italy: AI “digital humans” and VR supporting accessibility and sustainable eco-tourism in Gran Paradiso National Park.
🌐 Across the Alpine region: SMART-ALPS.EU, a 100% open-source digital ecosystem providing self-assessment and community-building tools.

But SmartCommUnity goes beyond technology. The co-created policy recommendations have also been integrated into the EUSALP macro-regional strategy, helping turn local experimentation into a blueprint for durable, community-led regional development.

We are therefore incredibly proud that SmartCommUnity has been selected for the REGIOSTARS Awards in the “A Connected Europe” category 🌟

The 2025–2026 mandate of the EUSALP Youth Council has been a year of turning young people’s ideas into meaningful contributions to the future of the Alpine Region.
From the first team building in Galtür to participating in EUSALP Action Groups, the Annual Forum, Interreg Alpine Space events and the EUSAIR Annual Forum, the EUSALP Youth Council have worked to ensure that youth perspectives are not only heard but integrated into regional cooperation and decision-making.
