Türkiye is witnessing a dangerous collapse of democratic norms in real time, and our members are suffering through it.
Following the deeply controversial court ruling on May 21st that removed democratically elected CHP leader Özgür Özel, the situation has now escalated into open repression against opposition voices and democratic institutions. Riot police stormed CHP headquarters using tear gas, rubber bullets, and disproportionate force against those inside, while openly disregarding the parliamentary immunity of opposition MPs.
Among those subjected to this violence were members of 3H, our Member Organisation from Türkiye.
Let this be absolutely clear: Peaceful political opposition is not a crime. Defending democracy is not extremism. Silencing dissent through force is authoritarianism.
We call on European authorities, institutions, and democratic governments to stop treating these events as routine political tensions. This is a serious attack on democracy, rule of law, and fundamental freedoms. Europe must respond with urgency. Safe relocation pathways and support mechanisms must be available for those at risk.
LYMEC stands in solidarity with all activists, journalists, students, elected representatives, and citizens in Türkiye facing intimidation and violence for defending democratic values. We are anxiously awaiting updates from our Members on the ground, and ask of you to show your support in this time.
