We work together with our Member States and partners to deliver a Single European Sky that will help overcome the safety, capacity and performance challenge

The EUROCONTROL Network Manager proactively manages a pan-European ATM Network spanning 41 member states and 2 comprehensive agreement states, handling pre-pandemic 11.1 million flights in 2019 in close liaison with the air navigation service providers, airspace users, the military and airports. The Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre provides an air traffic control service for the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and northern Germany. The Central Route Charges Office handles the billing, collection and redistribution of aviation charges. We support the European Commission, EASA and National Supervisory Authorities in their regulatory activities. We are actively involved in research, development and validation, with our research and innovation activities centred around our Innovation Hub in France. Our R&I work makes a substantial contribution to the outputs of the SESAR Joint Undertaking. Our aim is to deliver tangible results which will improve the ATM system's performance in the medium and long term. We are a civil-military organisation with unique expertise ensuring a platform for military and civil military cooperation designed to enhance airspace capacity, flight efficiency, military mission effectiveness and civil-military interoperability. And at our Training Institute in Luxembourg, we provide cutting edge online and in-person technical ATM training courses to around 100,000 aviation professionals every year.

Ab initio batch 89 is the latest group of student controllers to complete Initial Training with our training partner GATE Aviation Training in Copenhagen, with a 100% pass rate✨.

Our MUAC colleagues are constantly improving the training programme, securing the highest quality controllers & ensuring a future-proof controller headcount🤝.

Arriving in Maastricht, the students are well-equipped for the newly introduced in-house pre-transitional training, preparing them more directly for 's operational environment - and bringing them one step closer to becoming at .

📊 Severe weather impacts⛈️ in Week 35, our Summer ☀️✈️ reveals, with ➕200K minutes of en-route weather-related delay on Friday 28 August alone, pushing delays for the week ⬆️23% & driving arrival punctuality⏰ ⬇️2.6 percentage points vs Week 34.

📅 Air traffic nevertheless stayed high, ⬆️0.6% week-on-week at 36,581✈️ a day, ⬆️2.3% vs last year (⬆️2.4% for all summer to date).

More network traffic highs🏆 continued to be set, mostly on the busy south-east axis which generated 6️⃣ out of 7️⃣ new network traffic records (the other was set by Jet2 airlines):
3️⃣came from Türkiye🇹🇷 (records set by the State, main airport & Pegasus Airlines)
2️⃣from Romania🇷🇴 (ANSP ROMATSA and Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport)
1️⃣by Armenia🇦🇲 ANSP ARMATS.

Other Week 35 key data:
⚠️4.25 minutes per flight air traffic flow management ( ) delays, ⬆️1% vs 2025 – split between en-route (3.45 mins) & (0.80 mins)
⚡59,959 flights delayed by restrictions (8,566 flights a day & 23% of all flights)
✅3.0M minutes of en-route delays have now been saved this year by the continued application of capacity/weather measures ( ) in case of severe convective weather ⛈️ (including c.200K in W35).

👉EUROCONTROL brought together representatives from 1️⃣0️⃣ Member States 🇦🇱 🇧🇦 🇧🇬 🇭🇷 🇬🇷 🇭🇺 🇲🇪 🇲🇰 🇷🇴 🇷🇸 for a 2️⃣day Stakeholder Outreach Meeting hosted by North Macedonia, providing an opportunity for & national representatives to exchange directly on their priorities, challenges & future needs, and to identify where closer cooperation can make a difference.

📈✈️ With traffic growing & geopolitical developments continuing to reshape flows across Europe, the South-East axis is playing an increasingly important role in the European network.

Discussions are focusing on key challenges for the region & the wider network, including:

💬EUROCONTROL DG Raúl Medina: "Despite strong traffic✈️ growth of ⬆️2.4% compared with 2025, and July becoming the busiest month on record, network performance has improved: average delay per flight has decreased by ⬇️18% compared with last summer. Moving from an ambitious concept to an increasingly important part of airline networks: our latest analysis reveals how the Airbus is steadily making its mark on the network. ✈️

Since receiving its EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency Type Certification in 2024, operations in the European aviation network have steadily increased to reach, as of July 2026, around 6️⃣5️⃣ daily flights – a small but steadily growing niche in especially transatlantic operations.

🔎 Those July 2026 flight data show just how the occupies a unique middle ground between other & in terms of average flight distance (in nautical miles) flown in the network:

A320 family: ~751 NM
Boeing 737NG family: ~865 NM
A320neo family: ~996 NM
Boeing 737 MAX family: ~1,083 NM
➡️ : ~2,162 NM
Average widebody: ~3,572 NM
Very large widebody: ~3,982 NM.

Able to fly up to 4,700 NM with up to 244 pax & a published flight time of up to 11 hours, the gives airlines greater flexibility, stretching the possibilities of single-aisle aircraft by opening new routes, or offering higher frequencies on lower-demand routes.

📊 , gently improving , fewer delays & 1️⃣2️⃣ more traffic records🏆 across the aviation network in Week 33, our Summer ☀️✈️ reveals, with a further c.300K delay minutes saved by capacity/weather measures ( ).

In total W33 saw 36,174 average daily flights✈️, just 15 daily flights higher than W32, with overall traffic ⬆️3.0% vs 2025.

🏆A further 1️⃣2️⃣ traffic records were broken with 1️⃣State, 4️⃣area control centres ( ), 4️⃣ /airline groups & 3️⃣ exceeding previous daily records all set this summer of flights✈️ managed/operated.

Türkiye🇹🇷 contributed 6️⃣ of these with new highs set by Istanbul , the Turkish Airlines Group, Pegasus & SunExpress✈️, and by Istanbul & Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen 🏢.

Ireland🇮🇪 provided another 3️⃣ (State, & Dublin ); the 3️⃣remaining new daily records were set by Athens🇬🇷 & Yerevan🇦🇲 , & one airline group, Wizz Air✈️.

📉 Fewer en-route delays this year compared to 2025 & notably better than 2024, with average en-route delay currently 1.40 mins/flight, ⬇️19% vs 2025's 1.73 mins at this point in the year.

That breaks down into delay causes for the year as follows:
👥 53% ATC capacity & staffing (⬇️25% vs 2025)
⛈️ 33% adverse weather (⬇️13% vs 2025)
🚦 2% ATC disruptions (⬇️64% vs 2025)

That leaves 12% allocated to "Other causes", ⬆️18% vs 2025, which clearly reflects the impact of the Middle East crisis & wider geopolitical tensions.

As August & the busiest summer phase for the network draws to a close, this delay evolution is encouraging, given ⬆️2% more traffic right now & in the year-to-date compared to 2025.
