The Great War Centenary The Great War Centenary This project launches, besides the classical ceremonies, an artistic alternative program to draw young people also into this top event.

‘The Great War Centenary’ has all the signs to be a special event by which the Westhoek (Flanders Fields) and Flanders will receive a lot of national and international attention during the period 2014-2018. Several events will be organized in different categories: music, visual arts, literature, performing arts… spread out over the whole province West-Flanders. ‘The Great War Centenary’ wants to put the history of WW1 and peace tourism in the spotlights, in 2014-2018 and afterwards.

Though Thanksgiving on the Western Front was spent far away from families, Americans and Canadians who fought in the Great War were still able to pause for a moment and come together with their friends and fellow soldiers on their respective days of thanks.

It's estimated that 50-100 nurses worked in the hospitals and clearing stations surrounding the Ypres Salient. As the war went on, they became some of the first women to work as anaesthetists and also performed small surgeries. They even learned to treat shock using mixtures of saline, brandy and coffee.

Nurses also wrote letters recording soldiers' final moments to the families of the men who had died or were unlikely to survive.

This year, the service is followed by a 'Great War Remembered' concert at 4:30 and 7:30 PM in the Ypres Cathedral. Tickets to the concert can be bought here http://www.lastpost.be/nl/concert
