🎖️ HONOURING OUR HEROES: 80 YEARS OF BRAVERY

Last week, aboard the D’Entrecasteaux, the inauguration took place of the exhibition "The New Hebridean Volunteers of WWII" in the presence of the French ambassador in Vanautu and the President of the Republic of Vanuatu. 🇻🇺🇫🇷

This isn't just history; it’s a tribute to the men and women who stood up for freedom. 🗽

Did you know?
The New Hebrides was the very first French colonial territory to join the Free French Forces on July 20, 1940. 🗓️ From Port Vila to the Middle East, from the sands of Bir-Hakeim to the mountains of Italy, these Pacific volunteers fought for 2,037 days until the liberation of France. 🎖️🌍

Putting a face to the names 📸
This exhibition brings history to life by sharing the names, faces, and destinies of those who served. It was a moving moment to welcome several families, including the descendants of the Minister of Lands, whose grandfather was among these heroes.

Vanuatu: It’s rough, it’s rugged, it’s imperfect, but strangely pure. Like the fault lines that formed this archipelago in eons past, it is raw and random – Vanuatu’s pot holed roads the perfect metaphor. A trip down memory lane: Speed checks in 1970s Vanuatu! 🌴🚔

Check out this amazing vintage footage! This video captures a police speed check in the early 1970s in the New Hebrides (as Vanuatu was known before gaining independence in 1980). ✨

What makes this extra special is the history: at the time, the islands were a 'condominium', ruled jointly by France and the UK. In this charming clip, you can see the French and British police working side-by-side in a joint operation! 🇫🇷🇬🇧

The officer on the left is believed to be the late Inspector George Kaltoi Kalsakau. A truly wonderful piece of Pacific history. 👮‍♂️📜

Diplomatic exchanges have resumed between France and Vanuatu regarding the uninhabited islets of Hunter and Matthew, located east of New Caledonia. These discussions, which began in late 2025, have revived accusations of "territorial cession" made by several French political figures. At this stage, no official initiative confirms a plan to transfer sovereignty, according to diplomatic sources.

These two volcanic rocks, difficult to access and devoid of permanent population, nevertheless represent a major strategic asset. Their annexation allows France to claim nearly 350,000 km² of exclusive economic zone, a maritime area rich in fishing resources and potentially mineral resources, in a region of the Pacific that has become geopolitically sensitive.
