15th Wing Air Transport - Belgian Air Force This is the official page of the 15th Wing Air Transport which is located at the Melsbroek airbase (ICAO: EBMB), a part of Brussels Airport.

Maintained by the Wings' Public Relations section. The 15th Wing Air Transport is the only air transport unit of the Belgian Air Force. From our homebase at the Melsbroek military airbase, a part of Brussels national airport, we operate all over the globe. The wing holds two squadrons that transport passengers as well as cargo using a variety of aircraft. The 20th Squadron provides tactical airlif

t with its fleet of five legendary LOCKHEED C-130H HERCULES cargoplanes. This incredible versatile aircraft makes it possible to have various kinds of cargo delivered at the most remote airfields in the worst landing conditions, such as conflict areas, for 49 years and counting. The 21th Squadron is specialised in strategic passenger transport and (V)VIP-transport. The unit has two DASSAULT FALCON 7X long-range business jets. Today, our movements are coordinated by the EUROPEAN AIR TRANSPORT COMMAND. Together with The Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy and Germany, we provide airlift for whoever needs it. The 15th Wing's motto is TENACITY, which means; 'the quality or fact of being able to grip something firmly / persistence, determination, perseverance' A Sioux Indian chief completes the emblem.

The A400M from the Belgian-Luxembourg binational squadron of the 15th Wing participated in an international exercise organised by the Swedish Air Force. The aim of the mission was to train landing zone operations on a Swedish highway.

The A400M is a unique platform that provides advanced air mobility capabilities to defence forces. With its outstanding cargo weight and volume capacity, combined with its short and narrow runway performance, it once again confirms its position as a key enabler within the NATO transport fleet.

The Swedish exercise offered a unique experience and valuable training opportunity for the A400M crews. Alongside the crews, the tactical survey teams were able to broaden their experience and expertise in making roads and highways available for A400M landing operations. This capability is beneficial not only for the A400M weapon system itself, but also for other forces, including SOF units, fighter aircraft and other assets. It aligns perfectly with the concept of Agile Combat Employment, where a highway can serve as a contingency location with limited infrastructure and resources.

The A400M demonstrated its stand-alone capability to operate almost anywhere, at any time. We sincerely thank our Swedish friends for this opportunity and look forward to further joint training to strengthen our mutual experience, interoperability and capabilities.

This Swedish highway the national road 44. Is a national road of 115 kilometers and a connecting road between Gothenburg and Karlstad.

During the exercises and landings, this local connecting road is temporarily renamed a short but usable "runway". As a result, this strip of barely 1100m long and barely 17m wide paved tarmac immediately becomes a landing trip for all kinds of aircraft, transport & jets. All this in cooperation with the local Police, public authorities and close cooperation with the Swedish Air Force.

The Belgian-Luxembourg binational squadron of the 15th Wing was also present in Sweden on 02 and 03 June and participated for the first time in these trainings with the new A400M – CT05 in the international context. During the two days in which the strip could be cleared, several successful landings were carried out under the control of on-the-spot and mobile Air Traffic Control Swedish + Be colleagues from the Deployed Air Traffic Management – Tactical department, with very narrow margins/time slots and extreme precision.

The participation of the A400M was a precedent and did not go unnoticed but went smoothly and extremely successfully. There was therefore quite a lot of interest from the local press and residents and population.

During the first two weeks of May, the NATEVAL exercise, of paramount importance to the and the , took place at the .

NATEVAL was a capability assessment exercise for the unit, featuring various scenarios to simulate real-world operational conditions.

Having successfully completed the assessment, the 15th Wing is now certified as a Full Operational Capability (FOC) by NATO. This means the unit has completed operational tests and demonstrated the standards required to deploy, operate, and maintain itself effectively alongside NATO forces.

The 15th Wing warmly thanks for the welcome.
