Ambassador Rahim Hayat Qureshi was formally conferred the esteemed civil award Sitara‑e‑Imtiaz at a solemn and dignified Investiture Ceremony held at the Embassy of Pakistan in Brussels on 13 May. 🇵🇰

The honor was awarded in recognition of his distinguished contributions and unwavering service in advancing Pakistan’s national interests.

Deeply honoured by the conferment, the Ambassador conveyed his profound gratitude to the President Asif Ali Zardari , Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif & DPM/FM Ishaq Dar for this recognition, reaffirming his unwavering resolve to continue serving the nation with dedication, integrity, and commitment.

Ambassador of Pakistan to Belgium (April 1979 – August 1984)

Vasim Aoun Jaffery, widely known as V.A. Jaffery, remains one of Pakistan’s most respected figures in the fields of economics, finance, public administration, and diplomacy. Born into a highly educated family in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, he received his education at Allahabad University, where Economics and English were among his principal subjects.

Belonging to the first batch of the Civil Service of Pakistan, V.A. Jaffery devoted nearly five decades to distinguished public service. Throughout his remarkable career, he held several key national and international assignments, including Secretary Commerce, Secretary Planning, Secretary Industries, Ambassador of Pakistan to Belgium, Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Chairman Banking Islamization Commission, Executive Assistant to President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, and Adviser on Finance with the rank of Federal Minister during the two terms of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

As Ambassador of Pakistan to Belgium from April 1979 to August 1984, Ambassador Jaffery played an important role in advancing Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement with Belgium and Europe. During his tenure in Brussels, he worked to strengthen bilateral cooperation, promote Pakistan’s economic interests, and deepen diplomatic and cultural ties.

Known for his integrity, perseverance, intelligence, and refined personality, V.A. Jaffery was regarded as a highly cultured and visionary economic manager. His contributions to Pakistan’s governance, diplomacy, and financial institutions continue to be remembered with great respect.

Distinguished participation by community members from Belgium and Luxembourg reflected a strong spirit of unity, pride, and collective commitment to Pakistan’s enduring strength.

Amb Rahim Hayat Qureshi in his remarks, commended the courage, resilience, and professionalism of Pakistan’s armed forces, and reaffirmed a firm commitment to stand united in the face of any aggression against Pakistan.

(1970–1973)
Ambassador Mohammad Masood served as Pakistan’s Head of Mission to the European Communities during a formative period in Pakistan–Europe relations. On 26 November 1970, he presented his credentials to Franco Maria Malfatti, then President of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC), marking an important milestone in the formalization of Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement with the European institutions.

His tenure coincided with the early evolution of ties between Pakistan and the European Economic Community, as both sides deepened a structured partnership focused on trade and economic cooperation. He was also a pioneer of Cultural Diplomacy, focusing on sports exchanges and people to people contacts as a means of fostering closer ties between Pakistan and the EEC.

In this regard, a highlight of his tenure was the presentation of the Hockey World Cup Trophy to President of International Hockey Federation (FIH), Mr. Rene Frank, on 27 March 1971 in Brussels. The ornate trophy was a gift from Pakistan for the newly established Hockey World Cup tournament. It has a wooden base inlaid with ivory, with a globe and hockey on top in silver and gold. It was designed by a Pakistani designer, Mr. Bashir Moojid, and remains in use till date.

Hockey remains an immensely popular sport all over Europe, especially so in Belgium, which will be co-hosting the 16th Hockey World Cup tournament in August this year.

Today we celebrate the enduring legacy of a pioneering Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Mohammad Masood, whose efforts helped shape the trajectory of Pakistan’s engagement with Europe.
