Over the past two weeks, the Panitza Library was delighted to host Prof. Sara Benson from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as a visiting scholar at AUBG.

Prof. Benson, a leading expert in copyright law and scholarly communications, visited Bulgaria through the Fulbright Specialist Program to conduct research on the use of text and data mining exceptions in Bulgarian copyright law and to engage with librarians, faculty, and researchers.

During her stay, she led a workshop at AUBG, “Copyright for Academic Institutions", which brought together librarians, faculty, and staff for lively discussions on copyright, digital scholarship, and emerging legal issues in research and education.

Prof. Benson also presented at the Annual conference of the Bulgarian Library and Information Association (BLIA), sharing international perspectives on copyright and the evolving role of libraries in supporting research and innovation.

We are grateful to Sara for her generosity, expertise, and enthusiasm, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration in the future! 😊

Today, Panitza Library participated in the first day of the ###VI National Conference "Libraries in an Era of Global Change – A Source of Knowledge, Trust, and Digital Information," organized by the Bulgarian Library and Information Association (BLIA) in collaboration with the Department of Library Studies, Scientific Information and Cultural Policy at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski," and the Sofia University Library, in partnership with the Global Libraries Bulgaria.

The conference brought together library and information professionals from across Bulgaria to discuss topics such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, open access, copyright and publishing rights, information literacy, and innovative library services. We were especially pleased to participate in Dr. Ana Lazarova and Prof. Sara Benson’s workshop ‘International and Local Perspectives on Copyright Law for Academics’, which offered valuable insights into current copyright issues affecting libraries and academic institutions.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to our hosts at Sofia University Library, especially the library staff and Associate Prof. Dr. Bilyana Yavrukova, for their warm hospitality and excellent organization.

Panitza Library librarians actively participate in professional events like this to exchange ideas, build partnerships, share expertise, and learn from colleagues across the library community. These opportunities strengthen collaboration and help libraries continue to serve as trusted centers of knowledge, learning, and innovation.

Thank you to the organizers, speakers, and participants for this very inspiring and productive day.

A groundbreaking history of oil and its importance to US politics, finance, militarism, and consumerism from an award-winning author and scholar.

This expansive history traces the hidden connections between oil and capitalism from the late 1800s to the current climate crisis. Beyond simplistic narratives that frame oil as ‘prize’ or ‘curse’, Crude Capitalism uncovers the surprising ways that oil is woven into the fabric of our modern world: the rise of an American-centered global order; the breakdown of Empire and anti-colonial rebellion; contemporary finance and US dollar hegemony; debt and militarism; and the emergence of new forms of synthetic consumption.
