Here are some of the remains of the great fortress of Kaleto 💥
Thracian, ancient, late antique, medieval and Ottoman, this fortress is located 0.34 km north of the center of Svishtov.
It was built on the top of the hill "Chukata". It is bounded on the north by the Danube River and on land by the west and east. The peak itself is strategic, and it has very good visibility in all directions. The Fortress rises 66 m above the level of the Danube River.
Recent archaeological discoveries prove that the place was inhabited since the time of the Thracians.
The Svishtov fortress was built on the remains of a Roman watchtower - a unit in the defense of the Roman Empire during the last centuries of its existence.
The small fortification was closely connected with the Roman city of Novae, just a few kilometers away, the center of the famous elite I Italian Legion.
Inscriptions were found - stamps in Latin on bricks with the name of the legion and its cohorts. Coins of the emperors Octavian Augustus (27 BC-14 AD), Constantine the Great (306-337) and others were also found, as well as whole glass vessels. The earliest find is a coin from the time of Octavian Augustus, who ruled this province together with one of the last Thracian kings Remetalk.
This is one of the places we will visit in the trips of spring 2022 ✌🏻✨
