🇧🇬💪 DID YOU KNOW?
WHY ARE EXERCISES CALLED “BULGARIAN”?
Bulgaria has left a huge mark on modern strength training. 🏋️🇧🇬
For decades, Bulgarian weightlifting was among the world’s most successful systems, producing elite Olympic, World and European champions.
🏆 At the heart of this legacy was legendary coach Ivan Abadjiev, whose demanding training philosophy transformed Bulgarian weightlifting and made the country a global powerhouse.
🌍 Another important figure was Bulgarian coach Angel Spassov, who travelled to the United States in the late 1980s and helped introduce Bulgarian training methods to American strength coaches.
💪 One exercise became particularly associated with this influence:
THE BULGARIAN SPLIT SQUAT
Also called the rear-foot-elevated split squat, it became widely known by the “Bulgarian” name after Spassov demonstrated it while teaching Bulgarian training methods.
⚠️ Interesting fact: The exercise itself wasn’t necessarily invented in Bulgaria. Its exact origin is debated. What is clear is that Bulgarian coaches helped popularise it internationally, giving it the name we know today.
And there is also the Bulgarian deadlift, another unilateral strength exercise that carries the Bulgarian name.
🇧🇬 BULGARIA: A SMALL COUNTRY WITH A HUGE STRENGTH LEGACY.
From Olympic weightlifting to exercises found in gyms around the world, Bulgarian training continues to influence strength and conditioning.
❤️ Like if you’re proud of Bulgaria’s sporting legacy.
