🇺🇸🇧🇮 The United States and Burundi are marking a major milestone in global medical cooperation! For the 4th time, military medical professionals from the U.S. Army’s 30th Medical Brigade have arrived in Bujumbura for a MEDREX (Medical Readiness Exercise). From August 17 to 28, our team is working side-by-side with colleagues at Hôpital Militaire de Kamenge (HMK) across critical specialties, including surgery, emergency medicine, intensive care, gynecology, and dentistry.

MEDREX is a true two-way exchange: while U.S. service members share cutting-edge clinical techniques, they are also gaining invaluable experience from Burundian specialists who are known for their exceptional adaptability and dynamic patient care. Four exercises later, our shared commitment to saving lives and building resilient health systems remains stronger than ever!

The U.S. Embassy proudly launched the 7th cohort of the English Access Scholarship Program in Kigutu on July 25, welcoming 25 promising students selected through a competitive entrance exam from five secondary schools. Over the next two years, these students, will meet on weekends and school holidays at the Village Health Works facilities to strengthen their skills in English language, computer literacy, leadership, critical thinking, and American culture. The English Access Scholarship Program helps talented young people build the knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills needed to expand their educational and professional opportunities. We always love following the journey of our exchange alumni as their work grows and improves more lives across Burundi.

Congratulations to alumnus Hardy Ruremesha, founder of Spring Communities, on their exciting new milestones! They have officially broken ground on the Nanje Nobaho Center in Buterere, a community space designed to support thousands of children and youth with vocational training, learning support, sports programs, and a school canteen.

Spring Communities continues to innovate through youth webtoons focused on community problem-solving and strong local partnerships. Hardy also represented Burundi on the global stage as a speaker at Segal 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, joining leaders shaping Africa's next generation.

When leaders return from U.S. exchange programs, they build lasting, self-sustaining impact in their communities.

Congratulations to YALI alumnus Janvier Manirakiza and his team at Dreaming for Change (D4C) on their ongoing achievements! Through Butanuka Community Academy, D4C ensures 222 local children complete their education with strong academic performance—achieving a 96.37% promotion rate with zero dropouts—and serving over 40,800 student meals.

D4C is also driving economic resilience across Burundi through its 91 community-led savings groups with 2,247 active members, where 28 groups recently shared out over 217 million BIF (~$73,000 USD) in pooled savings to launch small businesses and strengthen household security. Beyond education and financial empowerment, their holistic approach continues to improve child nutrition for 180 malnourished children, support local agriculture with nearly 5,000 kg of harvested crops, and provide scholarships and mentoring to 68 vulnerable young girls.
