Coral reefs support 25% of marine life and up to one billion people's livelihoods while generating nearly $30 billion annually through tourism, fisheries, and coastal protection. But these rich ecosystems are in serious jeopardy: over half of global reefs died over the past several decades and more than 90% are on track to die by 2050. Coral Vita provides solutions for communities, companies, and

countries dependent upon healthy reefs to protect their livelihoods and revenue streams. Co-founded by friends Sam Teicher and Gator Halpern, we are driven by our lifelong connections to the oceans, and aim to give coral reefs the chance to survive changing conditions that threaten their existence. Coral Vita uses accelerated coral farming to preserve and enhance threatened reefs. Our corals are chosen because they are local to the restoration site and proven by marine scientists to be more resilient to changing conditions, such as warming temperatures and acidification. We will assess your reef's health, determine what corals should be grown to revive it, raise these corals in our on-land nurseries, install them into the reef once they are mature, and monitor their progress after installation for a time pre-determined with you. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), coral reefs generate nearly $30 billion annually through tourism, fisheries, and coastal protection. They create 15% of GDP for over two dozen countries, provide food security for hundreds of millions of people living in tropical coastal zones, and buffer coastlines for storm surges and erosion, reducing wave energy by up to 97%. Dying corals threaten ecosystems and economies. If a region's reefs are not revived, tourists seeking dive and snorkel experiences will skip its hotels for other islands, fisheries reliant upon reefs as nurseries will face collapse, and coastal residents and properties will be more exposed to rising seas and stronger storms. Whether you are a government that needs to protect its economy and citizenry, a resort that doesn't want to lose its valuable attraction, a reef restoration based-organization looking to reduce overhead, or a corporation or individual looking to invest in ways to benefit the planet, Coral Vita has a solution for reviving reef health. Watching us collect healthy corals from the reef can look a little alarming at first.

But every coral is carefully selected as part of a restoration plan.

Scientists decide which species are needed, where they’ll have the greatest impact, and which colonies can be collected safely. They even match factors like depth and sunlight to give each coral the best chance of thriving in its new home.

It’s not about taking coral from the reef. It’s about giving many more corals the chance to grow.

At first glance, it looks like we’re destroying a perfectly healthy coral.

We’re actually doing the opposite.

This technique is called microfragmentation.

By carefully cutting certain coral species into tiny pieces, we trigger a natural healing response that helps them grow much faster than they normally would.

One coral can become dozens of fragments. Those fragments keep growing. Those fragments become more corals.

It’s one of the reasons we’re able to restore reefs at a much larger scale than would otherwise be possible.
Sometimes, the fastest way to grow more coral… starts by cutting one apart.

How long until a restored coral becomes just another part of the reef?

It depends on the species and growing conditions, but thanks to microfragmentation, corals grow and fuse much faster than they would naturally.

As they continue to grow, they spread beyond their original base and onto the reef itself. Before long, it’s difficult to tell they were ever grown with our help.

Big things are happening in the Maldives.

Our team is on the ground building a new 2,500 m² modular, solar-powered coral farm in partnership with Jan De Nul Group. This is the sixth country where we’ve brought our mission to life.

Over the next 24 months, the farm will grow tens of thousands of diverse and resilient corals using our land-based restoration approach, with the first outplants planned for 2027.

But this project is about more than revitalizing one island’s reefs.

Together, Coral Vita is working to make restoration more efficient, affordable, and scalable, creating a for-profit for-nature for-good model that can be adapted to help regenerate reefs around the world.

We’re excited to share more as construction and restoration progresses.
