The Great Abaco Cays District and the City of Stuart (Florida) are sister cities.

In 2014, the then Stuart Mayor Troy McDonald and Chief Councillor Jeremy Sweeting signed a sister city agreement.

Since that time, over the years, Stuart has shown its support for the Abaco Cays and even other areas in Abaco. Several years ago, The Stuart Fire Department donated gear and equipment for the Fire & Rescue teams and even a ‘jaws of life’ for the Marsh Harbour Fire Department.

After Hurricane Dorian, Stuart City Commission, community and business leaders and non-profits (Operation 300) were among the many that came and helped Abaco in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. We are forever grateful.

This past week, Chief Councillor Jeremy Sweeting sought to strengthen these ties, and had breakfast with the new Mayor of Stuart, Campbell Rich. Chief Councillor Sweeting was invited to address the Stuart City Commission at City Hall during their meeting.

We look forward to welcoming Mayor Rich to the District soon!

The Great Abaco Cays District Council is saddened to learn of the passing of Anthony Roberts of Great Guana Cay.

Anthony Roberts, along with his Uncle Tommy Roberts, holds the distinction of being the first two elected members of local government to represent Great Guana Cay.

When Local Government was implemented in 1996, Anthony Roberts and Tommy Roberts were both elected in that inaugural term in 1996 and served until 1999.

We will miss Anthony’s voice at town hall meetings and his passion to see improvements in his community.

The Council sends our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Anthony’s family and friends, and indeed the entire community of Great Guana Cay during this most difficult time.
