Ministry of National Security Advances Preparations for Parole System at Caribbean Conference

Bridget E. Hepburn, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, and Commissioner of Corrections Doan Cleare, and team from the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services are currently in the Turks and Caicos Islands attending the 3rd Annual Caribbean Association of Probation and Parole Conference. This marks the first time the Ministry of National Security has attended the event, which the administration considered important in light of ongoing initiatives in preparation for the Conditional Release of Offenders Bill (Parole), which is anticipated to be passed by the end of 2026.

The event is being held under the theme, “Leveraging Probation, Parole and Rehabilitation as Effective Crime-Reduction Strategies in the Caribbean.”

Permanent Secretary Hepburn, Commissioner Cleare and Assistant Commissioner Rolean Forbes took the opportunity to meet with Mr. Leo Tigges, Senior Expert with the EL PACCTO 2.0 along with his Project Officer Cassandra van Diemen, with the view to seeking technical assistance to support our transition to a Parole System. The technical assistance requested includes training and skills development for officers, as well as modern software to support our Parole endeavours.

EL PACCTO 2.0 is an EU-funded programme dedicated to strengthening cooperation between Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean in the fields of justice and security. Meetings and discussions with EL PACCTO representatives will continue over the ensuing weeks.

Minister LaRoda Meets with Let's Swim Bahamas Over Shared Vision for Youth

NASSAU, The Bahamas — Minister of National Security, the Honourable Myles K. LaRoda, recently welcomed Andy and Nancy Knowles of Let's Swim Bahamas for an engaging conversation about the difference their organisation is making — teaching children to swim, keeping communities safer in the water, and giving young people the tools to thrive.

The Knowles walked the Minister through Let's Swim Bahamas' key initiatives, from expanding access to swimming instruction to strengthening water safety awareness in communities that need it most. They also spoke about what goes into building swim programmes that are community-driven and designed to last — not just one-off efforts, but lasting infrastructure for teaching kids a skill that could one day save their lives.

Minister LaRoda praised the meaningful impact of Let's Swim Bahamas' work, pointing out that what they offer goes far beyond swim lessons. These programmes help shape confident, capable young people while strengthening the communities around them.

It was clear by the end of the meeting that this was just the beginning, with both sides keen to stay connected and see where future collaboration might lead.

Fi****ms Trafficking Sensitisation Workshop Opens in Nassau

Today, the Ministry of National Security, in collaboration with the Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) and the United States Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, hosted the Opening Ceremony for the Fi****ms Trafficking Sensitisation Workshop at the Paul H. Farquharson Conference Center, Police Headquarters, East Street, Nassau.

The workshop brought together government officials, regional partners, and heads of law enforcement to advance a shared commitment to combating the illegal trafficking of fi****ms across the region. The Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band opened the ceremony with a musical prelude, lending the morning a spirit of unity and purpose, while Sergeant 3614 Dannielle Wilson of the Ministry of National Security moderated the proceedings.

Canon Stephen Davies, Force Chaplain and Education Officer of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, led the opening prayer, after which the Police Force Pop Band performed the national anthems of the United States of America and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

Ms. Bridget E. Hepburn, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, delivered the welcome remarks, framing the day ahead and emphasizing the value of collaboration in the fight against fi****ms trafficking. She extended a warm welcome to the visiting delegations, regional partners, and law enforcement officials in attendance, noting that the gathering reflected a shared understanding that no single nation can tackle this threat alone.

The ceremony continued with remarks from heads of international organisations, beginning with Ms. Tonya Ayow, Deputy Executive Director of CARICOM IMPACS, who spoke to the regional significance of the workshop and the ongoing partnership between CARICOM member states in tackling cross-border fi****ms trafficking. His Excellency Herschel Walker, United States Ambassador to The Bahamas, also offered remarks on behalf of the United States Embassy in Nassau, reaffirming the continued cooperation between the two nations on matters of security and law enforcement.

The Honourable Myles K. LaRoda, Minister of National Security, delivered the keynote address, presenting a resolute and forward-looking vision for the Government's fight against fi****ms trafficking. Minister LaRoda addressed the heavy toll illegal fi****ms continue to inflict on communities across The Bahamas, drawing a direct link between the spread of illicit weapons and the wider challenges of public safety and violent crime. He reaffirmed the Government's firm commitment to dismantling trafficking networks, tightening border and maritime security, and building the capacity of law enforcement to identify and intercept illegal fi****ms.

Session One concluded with a Ministerial/Heads of Law Enforcement session led by a CGIU representative, followed by an official photograph marking the occasion — a fitting close to a morning that stands as a testament to the shared dedication of The Bahamas, its regional partners, and international allies in disrupting illegal fi****ms trafficking and building safer, more secure communities across the region.

A New Era of Training, Service & Preparedness
The Royal Bahamas Police Force College has officially been commissioned.

Nassau, The Bahamas — A significant milestone in the advancement of policing in The Bahamas was marked on Monday, August 24, 2026, as the Ministry of National Security, the Royal Bahamas Police Force, in partnership with the U.S. Embassy Nassau officially commissioned the Police College and the handover of vehicles to strengthen the Force’s operational capacity.

Held at the Police Training College, the ceremony represented more than the commissioning of a facility—it marked an investment in the people, preparation and professionalism that form the foundation of effective law enforcement.

The occasion brought together Bridget E. Hepburn, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security; Ms. Shanta Knowles, Commissioner of Police; Mr. Hershel Walker, U.S. Ambassador to The Bahamas; senior government officials, law enforcement leaders and international partners. The Honourable Myles K. LaRoda, M.P., Minister of National Security, delivered the keynote address.

The Police College carries a powerful message: “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.” It is a fitting reflection of the purpose of police training—to equip recruits and officers with the knowledge, discipline, skills and professional values required to serve and protect the people of The Bahamas.

Pathway to Peace Institute Briefs Minister on Restorative Reintegration Programme

Representatives of Pathway to Peace Institute Limited met today with the Minister of National Security and the Permanent Secretary to provide an introductory briefing on the Pathway to Peace Restorative Reintegration Programme, currently being delivered (as a pilot programme) in partnership with the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDOCS).

The meeting provided an opportunity to share the vision and development of the programme, as well as highlights from the successful completion of its first cohort, which culminated in a graduation ceremony on 1st July, 2026.

Discussion also focused on the programme's restorative approach to rehabilitation and reintegration, including personal accountability, emotional and self-regulation, communication and conflict management, pro-social decision-making, reintegration and life readiness, and relationship awareness and repair.

The meeting marked a positive introduction and an opportunity for continued collaboration in support of rehabilitation, successful reintegration, stronger families, and safer communities.

BAHAMAS NATIONAL YOUTH GUARD COHORT 7
Today marked a powerful new beginning for Cohort 7 of The Bahamas National Youth Guard — a new group of young Bahamians stepping forward with purpose, discipline and a commitment to serve.

The official intake was honoured by the presence of Prime Minister the Hon. Philip “Brave” Davis, Minister of National Security the Hon. Myles K. LaRoda, and Permanent Secretary Ms. Bridgette Hepburn.

The young recruits were welcomed and encouraged by the Prime Minister, Minister LaRoda and Captain Miller of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, who shared words of encouragement, pride and purpose. Cohort 7 was challenged to give their very best, embrace the discipline of the programme and take full advantage of the training, education, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities available to them.

The journey began with bag checks and inspections, ensuring that each recruit was properly prepared and compliant. Then came the command: “FALL IN!” — as the young men and women formed their first military-style line together as Cohort 7.

Following the address, recruits loaded their gear and departed for the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Base, officially beginning a transformative experience designed to build confidence, leadership, resilience, discipline and a stronger sense of purpose.

Minister LaRoda Tours Migrafill Security Group’s National Monitoring Center

Minister of National Security, the Honourable Myles K. LaRoda, M.P., accompanied by Permanent Secretary Ms. Bridget E. Hepburn, recently toured Migrafill Security Group’s National Monitoring Center on Friday, August 14th, 2026.

The visit provided Minister LaRoda with an opportunity to gain insight into the Center’s operations and the systems used to support its monitoring and security functions.

During the tour, Migrafill representatives provided an overview of the Center’s monitoring procedures, security protocols and operational framework. Discussions highlighted the importance of effective monitoring, coordination and the continued use of technology in strengthening security operations and supporting national security and public safety efforts.

The visit formed part of the Ministry of National Security’s continued engagement with stakeholders across the security sector and its commitment to remaining informed of developments and capabilities that contribute to a safer and more secure Bahamas.
