We are delighted to share our recent collaboration with Minister Darron Pickstock and the Golden Isles Constituency Office in launching the Educational Opportunity Project - a vital community initiative dedicated to expanding access to educational opportunities.

The Scholarship and Educational Loan Division was proud to partner in this effort, which reflects the strong desire among Golden Isles residents for more scholarship programs offered by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and also underscores our commitment to informing the public about the available scholarship opportunities through the Ministry.

The launch event took place at Transformation Ministries International Church in Dignity Gardens on Monday evening, from 6 PM to 8 PM. We look forward to working together to create more pathways for educational success and community growth.

This past Saturday, July 25, 2026, our esteemed institutional partners from the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL) hosted their annual Bahamas Summer Sendoff 2026 - an inspiring event filled with anticipation and community spirit!
This special gathering brought together soon-to-be students accepted for the upcoming semester and their parents, providing a warm platform to connect, share, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
The event kicked off with welcoming remarks from Dr. Reggie Hill, Vice Chancellor for Strategic Enrollment at UMSL, setting an encouraging tone for the day. He was followed by Dr. Tonia Ferguson, Administrator at the Scholarship and Educational Loan Division, Ministry of Education, who motivated students to excel academically and urged them to return home equipped with their unique skills to contribute meaningfully to the Bahamas’ development.
Highlighting the university’s vibrant Bahamian community, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Steven Berberich, shared that over eighty Bahamian students are currently studying at UMSL — making the Bahamas the largest international student population on campus.
From UMSL, Project Manager for Strategic Partnerships, Ms. Jill Brockhorst, and Associate Director for International Recruitment, Mr. Mattheus Assis, provided valuable insights and answered questions, helping to ease any concerns about studying abroad.
Parents, including Mr. and Mrs. Dean — whose confidence in UMSL was evident — shared their experiences, praising the university’s responsiveness and faculty support in guiding their child through the application process and academic journey.
A vibrant segment featured Bahamian students at UMSL, Andrew Dean and Danitra Sargeant, who encouraged the incoming students to engage actively, seek support, and make the most of their university experience.
To foster community even before the semester begins, attendees participated in lively breakout sessions, team-building games, and interactive activities designed to promote bonding and camaraderie. Parents engaged in a Q&A session, gaining insights and sharing their hopes for their children’s futures.
As the event wrapped up, everyone exchanged contact information, laying the foundation for lasting connections and a supportive network for the journey ahead.
We are excited for our students' upcoming adventure at UMSL and proud of the strong partnership that makes moments like these possible!

We’re excited to share highlights from our recent Scholarship and Internship session at the IDB Teen Summer Student Learning Program!
Our Scholarship Division delivered an engaging 30-minute presentation, offering valuable insights into the various scholarships available and sharing tips on how to effectively prepare and apply.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the IDB House on East Bay Street on July 22. We are proud to support our youth in their educational journeys and look forward to seeing more students seize these opportunities!

On Friday, July 24, 2026, delegates from the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) visited the Ministry of Education, situated on University Drive, to renew their strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology. During this visit, Permanent Secretary Neil Campbell formally renewed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with UMSL’s Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Steven Berberich. This renewed partnership will span four years, building on the foundation established in 2022, which has seen significant engagement, including numerous attendees and graduates. Currently, over eighty Bahamians are enrolled through this collaboration, representing both public and private schools.

Also present for the signing were Director of Education Dominique McCartney-Russell; Acting Under Secretary Chilean Burrows; The Bahamas’ Scholarship and Educational Loan Division Administrator Dr. Tonia Ferguson; UMSL’s Project Manager for Strategic Partnerships Jill Bockhorst; and Associate Director for International Recruitment Matheus Assis.

In addition to formalizing the partnership, UMSL is on the island to host its Bahamas Summer Sendoff 2026 on Saturday, July 25. Now in its second year, this event welcomes newly accepted students and their parents, offering guidance and preparation for their upcoming educational journey. The visit underscores UMSL’s commitment to fostering educational ties and supporting Bahamian students’ academic pursuits.

On Wednesday, July 15, the Scholarship and Educational Loan Division welcomed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Honorable I. Chester Cooper, during a visit that was one of several to various education departments following his assumption of office. Accompanied by Permanent Secretary Neil Campbell and Director of Education Dominique McCartney-Russell, Administrator Dr. Tonia Ferguson guided the Minister on a tour of the unit.

During the visit, Minister Cooper personally stopped at each office and cubicle, engaging with staff members, learning about their roles, and taking the time to connect with familiar faces. He asked insightful questions about how he can support and promote positive growth within the division, demonstrating his commitment to the team and the work ahead.

On March 25, 2026, Benedict College and the Ministry of Education and Technical and Vocational Training collaboratively reinforced their partnership with the signing of a Program Specific Agreement. This agreement established a dedicated scholarship pathway for Bahamian undergraduate students. It was executed on Thursday, March 19, 2026, during a multi-day campus visit by a senior delegation from the Ministry, marking the second such agreement between Benedict College and the Bahamian Ministry of Education.

The five-year agreement created a structured, jointly funded pathway for Bahamian undergraduates to pursue priority degree programs at Benedict College. It provided a framework whereby Ministry-sponsored scholars received a combination of institutional and government scholarship support, covering a significant portion of the annual cost of attendance. These awards were renewable for up to four years and were available to students participating in the Public-School Scholarship Programme (PSSP), as well as eligible private school, homeschool, and transfer students. A primary focus of the partnership was to support Bahamian nationals pursuing higher education at Benedict College.

The visiting delegation included Dr. Tonia Ferguson, Administrator of the Scholarship and Educational Loan Division; Dr. Sophia A. Rolle, Consultant to the Public-School Scholarship Programme; and Robyn Lynes, Chair of the National Scholarship Committee.
