From May 15 to 19, 2026, a team led by the Dzongdag and Lam Neten successfully completed the 5-day Dagala trek. Despite some interventions in recent years, the historic route connecting Dagana and Genekha remained unpopular to the trekking community. Consequently, the primary objective of this expedition was to conduct a comprehensive field assessment to evaluate the feasibility of reviving this historic trail via the Kunga-Woobjilum route.
Based on firsthand trail observations and hearing from the nomads of Dagala, the team confirmed that the route holds significant potential in promoting tourism in the Dzongkhag. However, its formal revival will require targeted infrastructural upgrades and strategic collaboration with central agencies.
The team observed following critical works for the revival:
Trail improvement: Widen, clear, and stabilize the existing route to ensure hiker safety and smooth navigation.
Bridge Infrastructure: Construct small-scale pedestrian bridges over rivers and challenging terrain at few junctures.
Campsite Development: Construct guesthouses/rest sheds equipped with reliable piped water supply and proper sanitation (toilet) facilities at Dompang, Bjitekha, and Kunga Camp.
Institutional coordination: Mobilize budgetary and promotional support from the Department of Tourism and relevant central agencies to integrate this route into the national tourism framework.
The team remains highly optimistic regarding the viability of this revival works. Once developed, the route will open up the undiscovered potentials of Dagana and significantly easing the transportation of essential goods for the nomads of Dompang, Northogang, and Pangjukha.
The team remains profoundly grateful to Dzongrab, Drangpoen, Daga Rabdey, Tseza Gewog administration, Sector colleagues, Daga Central School, and Daga Throm business community for their grand reception organized upon the team's successful return
