Groundbreaking ceremony for Darachu Lake Revival๐Ÿƒ 08.11.2025

Situated on the ridges of Darachu, along the border of the Tsirang and Sarpang districts, Darachu Lake was a perennial water body until a natural outburst in 1967 caused it to dry up. The loss of the lake brought considerable socio-ecological and cultural challenges, particularly impacting local wildlife. However, the local community of Patsaling Gewog has long emphasized the importance of restoring the lake, citing its potential socio-economic benefits and its strategic location as a gateway to the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC).

To initiate this restoration, a groundbreaking ceremony was held today, coinciding with an auspicious z***r. A daylong Lhabsang, Thrisel, and Soelkha ceremony was conducted, spearheaded by the Lop Umzey and seven monks from the Tsirang Namgyel Choling Dratsang.

The event was attended by 35 officials and community members, including the Gup, Gewog Administrative Officer (GAO), Chiwog Tshogpas, and residents living near the Darachu area. The primary objective of the ceremony was to appease the local Tshomen (lake deity) before earth-moving activities begin, ensuring the successful completion of the project. The activities include cleaning of soi deposits, removal of debris and the construction of a retaining wall at the lake's outlet.

Once revived, Darachu Lake is expected to serve as a vital waterhole for wildlife and become an iconic tourist hotspot for Tsirang Dzongkhag. The project is jointly coordinated by the Divisional Forest Office (Tsirang) in collaboration with the Dzongkhag and Gewog Administration, with funding provided by Bhutan for Life.

Forest Fire Advocacy and SOP Development for RRT (Rapid Response Team) under Sergithang Gewog, Tsirang. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿง’โ€๐Ÿง’๐Ÿ™Œ

The Divisional Forest Office, Tsirang, with support from the Bhutan for Life (BFL) Project, has successfully established a Rapid Response Team (RRT) in Sergithang Gewog to strengthen local forest fire prevention and control efforts.

The RRT brings together key stakeholders; local leaders (Gup, Mangmi, Tshogpas), CFMG members, Desuung, BPC staff, and other agencies to form a coordinated frontline team for forest fire management. Their joint efforts will help ensure quicker detection, faster mobilization, and more effective suppression of forest fires, especially during the peak fire season.

As part of the initiative, the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) were thoroughly reviewed and finalized to improve coordination, identify gaps, and clearly define the roles and responsibilities of all involved. The strengthened SOP now serves as a comprehensive guide covering early warning and awareness, communication protocols, field operations, and post-fire assessment.

To ensure accountability and smooth operation, the RRT will be led by three elected executive members; a Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer who will serve a five-year term. These leaders will oversee team mobilization, resource management, and strict adherence to the SOP.

With stronger coordination, enhanced preparedness, and active community participation, this initiative is expected to significantly reduce forest fire risks and protect the biodiversity, property, and livelihoods of communities in Sergithang Gewog, Tsirang.
