Manas: A Safe Haven for Orphaned Wildlife – Welcoming Chunipa (07/05/20260)

Royal Manas National Park serves as a vital refuge and orphanage center for rescued and displaced wildlife, providing them with care, protection, and a second chance at life in the wild.

Chunipa, a young calf abandoned by his mother at a very tender age, was rescued and lovingly raised at Jomotshangkha Wildlife Sanctuary. Now at 10 months old, he has been successfully relocated to Royal Manas National Park, where he will continue his journey of growth and rehabilitation.

Upon his arrival at Manas Range, Chunipa received a warm and heartfelt welcome from the dedicated staff and by his new family members. He was greeted by —Acho Karma Ragyel (brother), Azhim Norbu Dema (sister), Mathang Changa Lhamo, Ani Sangay Wangmo, and Akhu Dawa Norbu—Chunipa is no longer alone.

At Manas, Chunipa will be raised with utmost care and will undergo gradual training under the guidance of experienced mahouts toward a brighter future.

Dema’s Remarkable Journey: From Thimphu to Manas

Dema, an orphaned female wild pig from Thimphu, has captured hearts with her extraordinary story of survival and adventure. On 3rd November 2025, she undertook an incredible journey—traveling in car nearly 400 kilometers in a single day from the cool northern valleys of Thimphu to the lush southern forests of Royal Manas National Park.
Since her arrival, Dema has settled into a relaxed yet majestic life in the sub-tropical wilderness of Manas. Surrounded by sambar deer, wild buffaloes, elephants, and the dedicated park staff of the Manas Range, she roams freely—bulldozing, wallowing, and ploughing through the forest as she pleases. Despite her independence, Dema knows exactly when to show up: whenever “chana” (feed) is served to Karma Raygyel and the other elephants, she never misses her share. Perhaps that explains her notably well-fed and healthy appearance.
Even so, Dema keeps herself fit—constantly on the move, reshaping the compound and forest floor with her energetic foraging.
For a long time, she kept one secret close—her mysterious companion. She never revealed her mate, and it was only in the final days before delivery, when her swollen ni***es became noticeable, that her pregnancy was confirmed.
Then, on April 28, 2026, Dema brought new life into the world. She gave birth to six piglets—three males and three females. Born on a Tuesday (Lhakpa) , her lively litter has already been lovingly named: Lhakpa, the eldest daughter; Dawa, the youngest son; and their siblings Phurbu, Passang, Penpa and Nima.
The RMNP family warmly welcomes these newest members. Their arrival marks a joyful expansion of the park’s living heritage, and they are met with heartfelt prayers and good wishes for a bright and thriving future.
Happy cheers to Dema and her beautiful family!

On 25th April 2026, while the Civil Service Wellness Day was celebrated across the country with marathon races, Royal Manas National Park hosted a truly unique program — a Buffalo Football Match. The match featured an impressive herd of 43 buffalos, including playful calves, bringing both excitement and charm to the occasion.

As a special incentive for their spirited participation, the buffalos were treated to a relaxing retreat at a newly built nearby “spa” — a large waterhole capable of accommodating hundreds of them. Yes, a spa day for buffalos! After the energetic match, they enjoyed a well-deserved wind-down, making the event as much about wellness as it was about fun.

The program wrapped up perfectly with a half-day match on the ground and a half-day of soothing spa time in the waterhole, creating a memorable and lighthearted take on wellness — one that beautifully blended nature, creativity, and humor.

RMNP Bids Farewell to CFO Mr. Tshering Dhendup (01.04.2026)

With deep respect and heartfelt gratitude, we bid farewell to our respected Chief Forestry Officer, Mr. Tshering Dhendup, who has served Royal Manas National Park (RMNP) with dedication and commitment.

As he embarks on a new chapter at the Nature Conservation Division (NCD), we extend our warmest wishes for good health, happiness, and continued success in his noble service to conservation.
