The National Livestock Research Centre (NLRC), with funding support from the Royal Queenโ€™s Project Office, is conducting a three-day training on apiculture from April 27 to April 29, 2026, for the Womenโ€™s Beekeeping Group of Chumey. The training is attended by 19 beekeepers along with staff from NLRC led by the Program Director of NLRC, the Livestock In-charge of Chumey Gewog, QPO Advisor Mr. Namgay Dorji, and local officials. The meeting was chaired by Gewog Thrizin, Mr. Jamphel.
Beekeeping training for farmers is an important extension activity that contributes to improving rural livelihoods, income generation, and crop productivity through enhanced pollination services. The training focuses on modern hive management, colony inspection, queen identification, seasonal colony management, pest and disease control, honey harvesting, processing, and value addition. The program is also expected to strengthen participantsโ€™ knowledge of proper apiary site selection, supplementary feeding during scarcity periods, and safe handling practices to reduce colony loss and improve honey quality. Such training enhances farmersโ€™ technical capacity and encourages the adoption of improved beekeeping practices, leading to increased honey production and better market opportunities.
In addition, beekeeping requires relatively low land investment and can be easily integrated with existing farming systems, making it particularly suitable for smallholder farmers. Regular capacity-building programs, practical demonstrations, and follow-up support from extension agencies are essential for sustaining beekeeping enterprises and strengthening the honey value chain in rural communities.

The Department of Livestock in collaboration with the Emerging Technology Division of the GovTech Agency, and with financial support from the European Union through the EU-TAAS project implemented by the FAO, is conducting a week-long training on drone technology from 23 to 29 March 2026 in Phobjikha, Wangdue.

The training brings together 21 livestock officials from highland dzongkhags, including Haa, Paro, Thimphu, Wangdue, Gasa, Trashigang, and Trashi Yangtse. Participants are also drawn from key institutions such as the National Highland Development Centre, National Yak Farm, National Livestock Research Centre, National Development Centre for Animal Nutrition, and the Regional Livestock Development Centre.

The main objective of the programme is to strengthen the capacity of officials in the effective and responsible use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for livestock management and rangeland monitoring. The training includes both classroom sessions and practical field exercises. Topics covered include drone regulations, basic flight principles, mission planning, aerial data collection, GIS applications, and operational safety. Participants are also engaged in hands-on activities such as simulation exercises, drone assembly, and real-time field operations.

The training demonstrates how drone technology can support highland livestock systems by tracking yak migration, mapping rangelands, assessing pasture conditions, and improving the delivery of veterinary services. This approach is expected to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and decision making in managing remote and challenging environments.

The initiative is also aligned with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) and the International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF), led by the Food and Agriculture Organization. It contributes to promoting sustainable livelihoods, strengthening climate resilience, and supporting inclusive development in Bhutanโ€™s highland communities.
