Bumthang District (Dzongkha: བུམ་ཐང་རྫོང་ཁག་; Wylie: Bum-thang rzong-khag) is one of the 20 dzongkhag (districts) comprising Bhutan. It is the most historic dzongkhag if the number of ancient temples and sacred sites is counted. Bumthang consists of the four mountain valleys of Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor ("Bumthang"), although occasionally the entire district is referred to as Bumthang valley.

Bumthang directly translates as "beautiful field" – thang means field or flat place, and bum is said be an abbreviation of either bumpa (a vessel for holy water, thus describing the shape and nature of the valley), or simply bum ("girl," indicating this is the valley of beautiful girls). The name is said to have arisen after construction of Jambay Lhakhang.

10th Dzongkhag Tshogdu Convened in Bumthang

The 10th Dzongkhag Tshogdu of Bumthang was successfully convened today, bringing together Dzongkhag Tshogdu Members and sector heads to deliberate on key development priorities and matters of public interest.

The session reviewed the implementation status of resolutions adopted during previous Dzongkhag Tshogdu sessions, presented the Annual Progress Report, endorsed the plan activities for the Financial Year 2026–2027, and deliberated on measures to enhance public service delivery, strengthen local governance, and promote sustainable socio-economic development.

The meeting reaffirmed the Dzongkhag Tshogdu's vital role as a platform for participatory governance, fostering constructive dialogue, informed decision-making, and collective action towards the continued development and well-being of the people of Bumthang.

Inauguration of Indigenous Sheep Rearing and Wool Weaving Revival Project,Chhumig Gewog

A new chapter towards preserving Bhutan’s indigenous sheep breed and promoting sustainable rural livelihoods has begun with the inauguration of the “Reviving Indigenous Sheep Rearing and Wool Weaving for Rural Livelihood” project at Zhurey Village, Chhumig Gewog.
The inauguration program was graced by the presence of the Chhumig Gewog Thrizin, Dzongkhag Livestock Officer, Farm Manager of the National Sheep Breeding Center, Project Officers from Bhutan Foundation, livestock officials, gewog representatives, and community members.
Supported by the Bhutan Foundation with a grant of Nu. 1.3 million and co-financing support of Nu. 0.5 million from the Chhumig Gewog Administration, the project has a total budget of Nu. 1.8 million. The project aims to revive indigenous sheep rearing practices, enhance wool production, and strengthen traditional wool weaving livelihoods among rural communities.
The project will directly benefit 9 rural women from Zhurey Village through the provision of indigenous sheep, improved sheep management practices, pasture development, and support for sustainable wool production. The initiative will contribute towards conserving Bhutan’s indigenous sheep resources while revitalizing the traditional art of wool weaving and creating new livelihood opportunities for rural communities.
This project marks an important milestone in preserving Bhutan’s cultural heritage, empowering rural women, and promoting sustainable livestock-based livelihoods in Chhumig Gewog.

On 29th July 2026, the Bumthang Dzongkhag Administration organized a joining programme to welcome the newly appointed five Vice Principals. The programme began with a courtesy meeting at Dasho Dzongdag's Chamber, where the VPs were welcomed by Dasho Dzongdag, Dasho Dzongrab, and the Chief Dzongkhag Education Officer, who emphasised professionalism and working with integrity. The Dasho reminded them to keep the child at the centre of any decision-making.
As part of the programme, each Vice Principal, like Principals and counsellors, was provided with a laptop to enhance administrative efficiency, strengthen digital record management, and support technology-integrated teaching and learning, as well as effective instructional leadership.
The programme concluded with an onboarding briefing by the Human Resource Officer, Chief DEO, and Principal Education Officer, covering administrative procedures, professional responsibilities, and expectations for effective school leadership and the successful implementation of national education priorities.
