A consultation meeting was held at Oloki-Tsalabi chiwog on 30th April to discuss the cultivation of coffee following the local Area potential-based economic development (LAPBED) approach to explore the feasibility of coffee cultivation as an alternative cash crop. This initiative comes in response to the consecutive three years of drought and rising temperatures that have severely impacted maize production, the village’s main staple crop.
The meeting was organized and facilitated by the Department of Local Government and Disaster Management (DLGDM) and supported by the European Union. The DLGDM team was led by the Program Officer and Research Officer, accompanied by the Dzongkhag Planning Officer, Economic Development and Marketing Officer, and the Dzongkhag Agriculture Officer. From the Gewog, the Gup, Gewog Administrative Officer (GAO), Agriculture Extension Officer, and Chiwog Tshogpa were present and hosted the meeting.
The primary objectives of the consultation were to assess the suitability of coffee cultivation in the region, promote alternative livelihood options, and create awareness on potential market strategies. A key outcome of the meeting was the formation of a women's cooperative farmers' group dedicated to coffee farming. The team also encouraged the group to diversify into seedling production alongside coffee beans, enhancing both economic resilience and local entrepreneurship. Furthermore the meeting encouraged the revitalization of fallow land.
Additionally, officials from the neighboring Jurmey Gewog, including the Gup, GAO, and Agriculture Extension Officer, attended the meeting. After observing the discussions and feasibility, they expressed interest in initiating similar coffee-based projects in their own gewog, where maize cultivation is also being adversely affected by climate-related challenges.
The consultation marks a significant step towards climate-resilient agriculture in Kengkhar Gewog and reflects the strong collaboration between local communities, government agencies, and development partners.
