Mountain Hazelnuts We are a social enterprise working to establish a world-class hazelnut production in Bhutan that creates shared value for all stakeholders.

Mountain Hazelnuts (MH) is a social enterprise producing premium quality hazelnuts in Bhutan. MH creates shared value for rural mountain communities, shareholders, and the environment. MH provides young hazelnut trees, inputs, and technical assistance to support smallholder farmers as part of a long-term partnership. The Company purchases all harvested hazelnuts, which are processed for export to international markets. Hazelnut cultivation enables smallholder farming households and community organizations to generate sustainable cash income. It also stabilizes mountain slopes, reduces erosion, improves water retention in watersheds, and mitigates climate change by sequestering carbon and improving soil fertility. Bhutan’s first 100% foreign investment company, Mountain Hazelnuts has grown to become Bhutan’s largest private employer. Its activities also provide long-term indirect income for thousands of additional Bhutanese.

CEO Dr. Sean Watson , shared exciting news with students at the College of Natural Resources (CNR) last week. Mountain Hazelnuts (MH) will sponsor a Master's scholarship and launch an undergraduate internship programme for CNR students.

The Master's scholar will join an existing active course. They will carry out research in one of seven high-priority areas identified by MH beginning in July 2027.

The undergraduate internship programme starts this winter, from December to February. Teams of up to four BSc students will perform targeted field data collection to address specific MH research needs.

For many CNR students, this will be a first taste of applied fieldwork, and a chance to contribute directly to research that improves how hazelnuts are grown across Bhutan, improving yields and incomes for growers.

We love sharing the success stories of our grower partners. Today, we feature Dawa Dhondup who began intercropping strawberries with hazelnuts in Thimphu about a year ago.

Dawa remains our top hazelnut grower from Thimphu. Our field extension officer Tandin Wangchuk, caught up with him recently.
