Hospital Acquired infections (HAIs) remain a major challenge to patient safety and healthcare quality worldwide. These largely preventable infections contribute to prolonged hospital stays, increased antimicrobial resistance, higher healthcare costs, and poorer patient outcomes. Strengthening the capacity of the frontline healthcare workers to prevent, detect, and respond to HAIs is therefore essential for delivering safe and effective healthcare services.

To enhance infection prevention and control (IPC) practices at ERRH, Mongar, a training on HAI Care Bundles and revised checklists was conducted in three batches on 29 May, 1 June, and 2 June 2026 for 115 nurses from 10 wards and units. The training focused on HAI prevention strategies, revised care bundle checklists, and the role of nurses in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). Sessions covered key HAIs, including Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI), Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI), Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP), and Surgical Site Infection (SSI).

The training enhanced participants’ knowledge and readiness to implement standardized infection prevention measures and reinforced adherence to standard precautions and aseptic techniques. The training was facilitated by the Quality Assurance and Infection Prevention and Control focal person, Nursing Superintendent, Medical Specialist, and trained nursing staff.

We would like to thank KGUMSB for the refreshment and lunch for the training

May 12 is celebrated every year as the International Nurses Day. Today, Eastern Regional Referral Hospital celebrated International Nurses Day to honor the invaluable contributions of nurses, who are regarded as the backbone of the healthcare system. This year’s theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” highlights the vital role nurses play in shaping the future of healthcare and emphasize the importance of empowering nurses through leadership, decision-making, and patient care responsibilities.

The celebration was graced by the Medical Superintendent as the Chief Guest and attended by hospital Lams, Heads of Departments, doctors, In-Charges, administrative and paramedical staff, supervisors, and students from Arura Academy of Health Sciences and Apollo Bhutan Institute of Nursing. The program included the recitation of Tashi Tsegpa, offering of Zhabten for the long life of His Majesty the King, the Nightingale Pledge, lighting of butter lamps, and cake cutting ceremony.

During the event, the Officiating Nursing Superintendent and the Medical Superintendent acknowledged the dedication, compassion, and selfless service of nurses, while voluntary speakers also expressed appreciation for their unwavering commitment to caring for the sick and suffering. The highlight of the celebration was the distribution of tokens of appreciation to all nurses through nursing ICs, a wheel-of-fortune lucky draw with cash prizes, and cultural dance performances by students. The program concluded with a group photo session and refreshments.

Similarly, 34 first-year second-semester nursing students from Apollo Bhutan Institute of Nursing joined the hospital last week for clinical posting. They were provided with similar orientation on the physical setup, hospital services, IPC measures, and clinical workplace protocols.

Meanwhile, 47 final-semester third-year nursing students of Arura Academy of Health Sciences (AAHS) completed their six-week long clinical posting and returned to their college on 2nd May. The Nursing Administration organized a simple felicitation program where experiences, advice, and tokens of appreciation were shared. The student representative expressed gratitude to the ERRH administration and staff for their continued mentorship and support throughout their clinical training.

Currently, ERRH serves as a teaching hospital for AAHS and ABIN providing students with clinical exposure and hands-on practices, translating their theoretical knowledge into real patient care.
