The Aerodrome Section, Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) has completed the certification of Gelephu International Airport (GLU) on 16 Sept 2023, and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has officially accepted Gelephu’s registration as an international airport on 27 Oct 2023.

Marking this historic milestone, Drukair - Royal Bhutan Airlines will commence international operations on the Paro–Gelephu–Kolkata (PBH-GLU-CCU) route.

The inaugural flight for this sector will take place on 08 December 2025 with the following schedule:

• KB210–PBH→GLU(08:00–08:40)|GLU→CCU(09:40–10:40)
• KB211–CCU→GLU(12:40–14:40)|GLU→PBH(15:10–15:50)

Effective from 12 December 2025, the regular schedule (operating every Monday and Friday) will be as follows:

• KB210–PBH→GLU(11:00–11:40)|GLU→CCU(12:10–13:10)
• KB211–CCU→GLU(13:50–15:20)|GLU→PBH(15:50–16:30)

This new international route marks another step forward in enhancing air connectivity, promoting tourism, and strengthening regional ties.

Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority has successfully concluded the regulatory process for the induction of Drukair’s newly acquired Pilatus PC-24 aircraft into its fleet. The aircraft has been officially registered with the nationality and registration mark A5-JUW, and the required airworthiness certificate and operations specifications have been issued, effective 28 November 2025.

The BCAA extends its heartfelt congratulations to Drukair on this important milestone and commends the airline for its continued contribution to the growth and advancement of Bhutan’s aviation sector.

The Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) conducted a comprehensive review meeting today to assess the progress of the Bhutan National Aviation Safety Plan (NASP) 2023–2025. The meeting brought together key aviation stakeholders to evaluate ongoing initiatives.

The objectives of the meeting included:

1. Reviewing all NASP 2023–2025 action items
2. Evaluating the status of implementation across sectors
3. Identifying challenges, gaps, and areas requiring attention
4. Strengthening collaboration and coordination among stakeholders

Participants included representatives from BCAA, DoAT and Airlines. The review served as a critical platform to enhance the effectiveness of Bhutan’s Aviation Safety Plan and reaffirm the Bhutan’s commitment to ICAO compliance and continuous improvement.

The Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority is organizing a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory Workshop for Aviation Stakeholders (Aircraft Operators and Aviation Turbine Fuel suppliers) from 26–30 May 2025 at Hotel Nordenma, Thimphu.

The workshop aims to strengthen the technical capacity of focal points of the stakeholders in fulfilling Bhutan’s GHG reporting obligations under the UNFCCC and to deepen understanding of the IPCC guidelines for estimating emissions from Civil Aviation.

It also serves as a consultative platform to streamline GHG data collection, reporting, and management, promoting collaboration and ensuring adherence to the principles of Transparency, Accuracy, Consistency, Completeness, and Comparability (TACCC).

The Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority successfully organized the Fifth Civil Aviation – Coordination and Consultation Meeting (CA-CCM/5) on 22 May 2025 at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT) in Thimphu. The meeting was graced by the presence of Hon’ble Yab Dasho Dhondup Gyaltshen and was chaired by the Hon’ble Secretary of MoIT, Dasho Karma Wangchuk .

The meeting brought together heads and key technical personnel from Civil aviation stakeholders, including the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT), Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA), Department of Air Transport (DoAT), National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM), Drukair Corporation Ltd, Tashi Air Private Limited, Heli Bhutan Private Limited, Bhutan Air Services (BAS), and Bhutan Oil Corporation (BoC).

The CA-CCM remains an important platform for promoting coordination, addressing challenges, and strengthening cooperation among Bhutan’s aviation stakeholders to improve safety, efficiency, and growth in the sector.

Bhutan has participated in the National Recurrent Inspector workshop. The CASP-AP Recurrent Inspector Workshop was successfully held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 21 to 24 April 2025, in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAA-SL).

Over four days, Aviation Security Inspectors from across the region enhanced their skills in key areas such as root cause analysis, enforcement planning, security culture, human factors, and risk assessments. Participants also received updates on the latest ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and engaged in practical exercises to apply their knowledge.

This workshop helped strengthen national oversight capabilities and reinforced regional cooperation to address emerging threats in civil aviation security.
