In a day or two, he will hang up the magnum boots, green uniform put away. The uniform will feel a bit heavier, badges a little more significant. But a forester never truly leaves the woods. The forest stays inside him, woven into his character, returning to the woods simply to walk, breathe and listen to its cacophony. He leaves behind living, breathing testament of his 37 years of dedicated service, air - little cleaner, water - little purer, forest - little ecologically vibrant.

For Rinchen Dendup, the final exit after 37 years of service with the Department of Forests and Park Services wasn't easy. It is a quiet, reflective and emotional moment, as he speaks his final farewell speech with a growing lump in the throat.

Rinchen Dhendup, was initially appointed in 1988, his appointment letter written by a typewriter. He was initially placed in Grade 19. In his career spanning 37 dedicated and committed years, he served in various forest offices, from Dagana to Tsirang, Chukha, Sarpang and finally in the Divisional Forest Office, Wangdue. He gradually rose his career ladder to SR. FR III.

In his 37 years of service he has contributed immensely to the overall conservation and management of forest and natural resources, serving in various capacities including as Range Officer.

The Divisional forest Office, Wangdue wishes him a peaceful retired life and also best in his future endeavour. We remain grateful for your long and dedicated service to the Tsa-wa-sum.

Every year, 2nd June arrives not just as a DATE on the CALANDER, but as a reminder of a vision that quietly transformed Bhutanโ€™s forests and landscapes. Today, we are honouring this royal vision with gratitude and responsibility, by protecting, restoring, and nurturing the forests that sustain us all.

Bhutanโ€™s story is unique. Our forests, mountains, and rivers have always been cared for not only by policy, but by tradition, wisdom, and the deep respect of our forefathers for nature. This harmony between people and environment is what makes our nationโ€™s path so special.

This day is nationally significant as it honors His Majestyโ€™s visionary leadership and Bhutanโ€™s strong commitment to environmental stewardship. Under His Majestyโ€™s profound guidance, the Social Forestry Program launched in 1979 became a turning point in our history. It empowered communities to plant trees, manage forest resources sustainably, and take active ownership of Bhutanโ€™s natural heritage.

As we gather to commemorate this important occasion, we are reminded that Bhutanโ€™s strength has always rested on a deep and enduring relationship with nature. Our identity as a nation is shaped by values of balance, compassion, and responsibilityโ€”where development is pursued not at the cost of nature, but in harmony with it. These principles, enshrined in our development philosophy of Gross National Happiness and embedded in the Constitution, continue to guide our collective journey.

This yearโ€™s observance of Social Forestry Day under the theme โ€œ๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ง๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—™๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ข๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—™๐˜‚๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒโ€ comes at a time when the urgency of environmental protection has never been greater than any time before. Rising climate risks, increasing pressure on ecosystems, and the gradual loss of biodiversity remind us that restoration is not a choice, but dire necessity. It is also a call to actionโ€”especially for our younger generationโ€”to become active stewards of Bhutanโ€™s natural heritage.

Bhutanโ€™s forests are among our most precious national assets. They are not merely stands of trees, but complex and living ecosystems that sustain every aspect of life. They regulate our climate, protect our watersheds, support rural livelihoods, store carbon, conserve biodiversity, and provide spaces of cultural and spiritual importance. With nearly 70 percent forest cover, our country stands as a living example of sustained national commitment, guided by visionary leadership and strengthened through community participation.

On this occasion, we are reminded that conservation is most effective when it is collective. Schools, local communities, institutions, and individuals all have a vital role to play. Tree planting is one of the simplest yet most powerful acts of restorationโ€”it represents continuity, resilience, and hope. Each tree planted today becomes part of a larger effort to restore degraded landscapes and strengthen ecological balance for the future.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources continues to prioritize sustainable forest management through strengthened community forestry, expanded restoration initiatives, and integrated nature-based solutions into national development planning. At the same time, we recognize the ongoing threats to our forest ecosystems, including illegal activities, habitat degradation, and the intensifying impacts of climate change. Addressing these challenges requires not only policy and programs, but also shared vigilance and commitment from every section of the society.

On behalf of the Ministry, I would like to express sincere appreciation to all foresters, communities, partners, and volunteers for their continued commitment to environmental sustainability and integrity to ensure Bhutanโ€™s green legacy.

As we come together today on 2nd June 2026 to observe and celebrate Social Forestry Day with the theme "Plant Together, Restore Forever, Secure Our Future" we reflect on the visionary leadership of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, whose selfless leadership embedded environmental conservation into Bhutan's national identity.

Bhutan's global reputation as an environmental vanguard is the result of the visionary leadership of our Monarch. The celebration of the day beautifully intertwines ecological preservation with reverence for our Monarch.

Social Forestry Day that coincides with the coronation day of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo is not just another day on the calendar but a profound and significant day that celebrates ecology and deep reverence for our Monarch.

The entire country transforms into a collective ecosystem of action where schools and youth, local municipalities, community forestry groups, government and non-governmental organization, CSO, monastic institutions and the general public come out to plant tree sapling, which roots take hold in soil, signifying solid confirmation to maintain constitutional mandate of 60% forest cover for all time to come.

Divisional Forest Office, Wangdue wishes everyone Happy Social Forestry Day and Coronation Day.

The steel door of the transport crate would slowly slide open and out he'd walk into a better and more spacious wildlife rescue and care center in Thimphu. Far better than the crammed enclosure here in Divisional Forest Office, Wangdue. Little crammed it was, yet was his home for almost last 5 years.

He was first rescued as a small orphaned cub. An innocent naughty cub, climbing on the tables and chairs , knocking off everything on it. Slowly, we have witnessed him transition from learning his mechanical art and agility to reaching a full physical maturity. He has put on hundred pounds of dense muscle, grew sharp claws and thick black fur.

For close to 5 years he has been a ward of our care and protection. Today he's no longer a cub but a fierce force of nature, standing really tall and sturdy. A staggering transformation it was.

He has come of age and now for all his good, he is being relocated to a wildlife rescue and care center, far larger, one that would give him the best representation of his wild home.

Fare the well!

When first found, it was found a wet and shivering spotted fur mass tangled within the dense undergrowth of the forest edge in Samtengang. With eyes hardly open, a raspy mew cut through the morning dampness of Samtengang. It looked less like a predator but more of a helpless creature.

For a first timer,.it looked like a tiny ordinary kitten. But in reality it was a wild kitten of a Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis). Just few days old, it was entirely on its own, in a most vulnerable world.

Luckily the cute kitten was rescued by Divisional Forest Office, Wangdue and being nurtured at our rehabilitation enclosure with another kitten.

A little orphaned piglet of wildpig (Sus scrofa) joins today from Baylqngdra.

Currently, our rehabilitation enclosure houses 2 kitten of leopard cat, 3 sambar deer and 1 Asiatic black bear.

Monkeys by nature and evolution is defined by boundless agility, canopy navigation and complex social bonds. Yet when they're tethered to a rusted heavy iron chain, it totally distorts their intricate, matriarchal societies of grooming rituals, vocal communications and education of their young. It causes deep physical deprivation to leap, climb and forage. They also face immeasurable psychological trauma.

For the two - a 3-year old male and 1-year old female monkey at Kabjisa, Punakha Dzongkhag, this is exactly what they've been subjected to. But finally, the forestry officials of Divisional Forest Office, Wangdue were able to rescue and release them safely back into the wild.

Chapter 5, section 86 of Forest and Nature Conservation Act, 2023 restricts killing, injuring, destroying, capturing, collecting, possessing, breeding, raising, cultivating, and trading of any wild flora and fauna specimen or product whether or not in State Forest Reserved Land.
