The Divisional Forest Office, Samtse has successfully radio-collared another wild Asian elephant (๐‘ฒ๐’๐’•๐’‚ ๐‘บ๐’‚๐’๐’ˆ๐’‚๐’š) on 27th June 2026, marking another significant step towards strengthening the conservation and management of Asian elephants in the region.
The collaring operation was carried out by the Divisional team under the technical guidance of the Nature Conservation Division, Department of Forests and Park Services. The operation involved careful planning, field surveillance, and coordinated teamwork to ensure the safety and well-being of both the elephant and the personnel involved.

This latest collar builds upon the successful collaring of ๐‘ท๐’†๐’๐’…๐’๐’, the lead female of a breeding herd, and ๐‘ฎ๐’†๐’Ž๐’ƒ๐’, a lone tusker in November 2025. With three elephants now being monitored, the Division will be able to gather more comprehensive information on elephant home ranges, seasonal movements, migratory routes, habitat use, and areas prone to humanโ€“elephant conflict.
The GPS tracking data will support the development of more effective early warning systems, enabling timely alerts to communities when elephants approach settlements.

The management extends its sincere appreciation to the team from Nature Conservation Division for its continued technical guidance and to ICIMODโ€“Bhutan Ecological Society for their financial support in the purchase of the collar and promoting humanโ€“elephant coexistence in Bhutan.

Together, every collar brings us one step closer to understanding elephants better and ensuring a safer future for both people and wildlife.

The Division also have installed PTZ cameras (CC cameras) at the exit and entry points to alert the public on possible intrusion into the settlements.
