The Traffic Division would like to reiterate and remind all motorists of the lane-changing rules to ensure road safety and smooth traffic flow on double-lane roads.

All drivers are advised to strictly follow the rules as below:

1. Always overtake from the right lane.
2. Use the left lane when driving at a lower speed.
3. Use the right lane for higher speeds, but do not exceed the prescribed speed limit.
4. Always use the appropriate indicator when changing lanes.
5. Give way to vehicles that are signaling their intention to change lanes.
6. Do not change lanes where there is a continuous, unbroken line on the road.
7. Change lanes only where there is a broken line, and only after signaling and ensuring it is safe to do so.
8. Always check mirrors and blind spots before switching lanes.

The Traffic Division urges all road users to follow these rules responsibly to prevent accidents and promote safe driving culture.

PUBLIC NOTIFICATION

In light of the State Visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of the Republic of India to the Kingdom of Bhutan scheduled for November 11th and 12th, 2025, the Traffic Division would like to inform the public of the following traffic restrictions:

1. Vehicle movement will be restricted from Thimphu to Paro on November 11th, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and on November 12th, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM to facilitate the smooth passage of the VVIP convoy.

2. All vehicular movement will remain closed along Norzin Lam on the evening of November 9th, 2025, from 7:00 PM until the departure of the VVIP.

3. The traffic along Chang Lam and Chogyal Lam will remain closed from 7:00 PM on November 10th, 2025, until the departure of the VVIP delegation on November 12th, 2025.

Minor traffic disruptions and restrictions will occur within the core Thimphu Thromde area on the aforementioned dates.

Therefore, the public is requested to kindly cooperate with the traffic personnel on duty. For any clarification, please contact 17119534.

The Traffic Division, Thimphu, informs the general public that in view of the upcoming Global Peace Prayers Festival, there will be enhanced monitoring and inspection within Thimphu city and along the highways. Strict legal action will be taken against individuals found committing major traffic offences.

Vehicle owners are reminded that permitting an intoxicated or unlicensed person to drive is a punishable offence.

The public is also advised to avoid unnecessary travel due to prevailing adverse weather conditions.

Public Notification

The Traffic Division informs the general public that, in addition to routine monitoring of traffic rules, special emphasis will be placed on lane discipline during the second week of September.

A flying squad team along the highways and traffic personnel within city areas will ensure strict compliance.

Motorists are reminded to observe the following rules on double lane/two way traffic at all times
1. Always overtake from the right side.

2. Use the left lane when driving at low speed.

3. Use the right lane for higher speeds, without exceeding the prescribed speed limit.

4. Always use the appropriate indicator light when changing lanes.

5. Give way to vehicles indicating a lane change.

6. Do not change lanes where there is a continuous unbroken line.

7. Lane changes are permitted only where broken lines are marked at the road center, and only after using the proper indicator and ensuring safety.

Strict adherence to these guidelines will help ensure your safety as well as that of other road users.

This announcement is intended to allow motorists sufficient time to PREPARE and COMPLY fully with traffic regulations.

The Traffic Division wishes to notify the public that intensified inspections on vehicle documentation and roadworthiness will be conducted by the flying squad team along highways and within city areas.

The checks will focus on ensuring drivers possess

- Valid driving licences,
- Vehicle registration, roadworthiness certificates.
- Vehicles will also be examined for proper
functioning of headlights, indicators and brake
lights.
- Use of standard number plates. -Absence of
graffiti or unauthorized markings.
- Further attention will be given to the legality and
noise level of silencer pipes
- The condition of tyres, and valid emission test
certificates.

Therefore, the motorists are reminded to adhere strictly to all traffic rules at all times, as safety remains the Traffic Division’s top priority. Thank you.

🚨 PUBLIC NOTICE 🚨
Targeted Offence for the 3rd Week

The Traffic Division hereby informs all road users that, besides enforcing regular speed checks, strict speed gun enforcement along with additional speed cameras and traffic personnel will be deployed to monitor overspeeding.

Driving above the prescribed speed limits is a punishable offence under the RSTA Act 1999 and RST Regulations 2021, with demerit points for repeated violators.

This initiative is aimed at saving lives, promoting safe driving habits, and protecting other road users from speed-related crashes.

Therefore, all are requested to cooperate with traffic personnel in the field and strictly adhere to speed limits.
