Annual Mushroom Festival at Geney Zampa

The annual two-day Mushroom Festival was inaugurated today at Geney Zampa, Thimphu Dzongkhag, bringing together mushroom growers, local communities, and stakeholders to celebrate Bhutan’s rich mushroom diversity and growing mushroom sector. The first day was graced by the Chief Guest from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. This year’s festival is especially significant as it coincides with the 40th anniversary of Bhutan–Japan relations, highlighting the longstanding cooperation in mushroom research and development. A major attraction is the highly prized Matsutake mushroom, naturally found in Bhutan’s pine and oak forests and renowned for its distinctive aroma, culinary value, and premium market price, particularly in Japan. The festival is organized by Thimphu Dzongkhag in collaboration with the Geney Mushroom Group and the Department of Tourism, promoting sustainable mushroom harvesting, cultivation, value addition, and livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Training on Nameko Mushroom Cultivation Using Sawdust Media Successfully Conducted in Khatoed Gewog, Gasa Dzongkhag

The National Mushroom Centre (NMC), in collaboration with the Dzongkhag Agriculture Sector, Gewog Agriculture Extension Office, and Gewog Administration, successfully conducted a hands-on training program on Nameko mushroom cultivation techniques using sawdust media in Khatoed Gewog under Gasa Dzongkhag.

The training was organized with financial support from the UNDP-GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) / COMDEKS Project to strengthen the capacity of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and promote sustainable livelihood opportunities through mushroom cultivation.

A total of 14 participants attended the training, where they acquired practical knowledge and skills on substrate preparation, spawning techniques, incubation management, and other essential cultivation practices for Nameko mushrooms. The participants actively engaged in the practical sessions and expressed keen interest in adopting the technology.

Following the training, participants will embark on mass cultivation of Nameko mushrooms using sawdust media, which is expected to enhance local mushroom production, create income-generating opportunities, and contribute to food and nutrition security in the community.

The National Mushroom Centre will continue to provide technical guidance and support to ensure the successful implementation and scaling up of Nameko mushroom cultivation in the gewog.

The National Mushroom Centre (NMC) conducted a hands-on training program on the cultivation of shiitake mushrooms using sawdust-based substrate media for Precious Vajra Mushroom Farm located at Paro. The training was organized upon the request of the farm’s CEO, Mr. Norbu, a former employee of the National Mushroom Centre, with the objective of enhancing technical knowledge and commercial production capacity in gourmet mushroom cultivation.

The farm has received support from the Department of Employment and Entrepreneurship (DOEE) under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment (MoICE) through a cost-sharing mechanism, under which essential mushroom cultivation equipment and facilities were provided. These include an autoclave, laminar airflow unit, room cooling system, humidifiers, fresh air exchange (FAE) system, and an automatic halogen moisture analyzer. In addition, the company has independently procured key operational machinery such as a sawdust grinding machine, ribbon mixer, and bagging machine. Under the leadership of Mr. Norbu, the company is actively focusing on the production of fresh organic shiitake and other gourmet mushrooms to contribute towards the growth and commercialization of Bhutan’s mushroom industry while working closely with relevant agencies and stakeholders.

The Nameko mushroom promotion project is being implemented at Khatoed Gewog under Gasa Dzongkhag with funding support from UNDP-GEF SGP/COMDEKS. The initiative is led and coordinated by the Gasa Dzongkhag Agriculture Sector in close collaboration with the National Mushroom Centre (NMC), which provides technical support. The project is being carried out by the Community-Based Organization (CBO), Rangzhi Sanam Detshen. As part of the capacity-building efforts, NMC has successfully conducted hands-on training on Nameko mushroom production for 13 CBO members, comprising 11 female and 2 male participants.

Currently, 12 trained members are actively engaged in cultivating approximately 8,000 short bed logs for Nameko mushroom production. To further enhance production capacity and diversify cultivation methods, a follow-up training on sawdust-based Nameko mushroom cultivation is scheduled later this month. All required materials and equipment for the training have already been procured, ensuring timely implementation of the next phase of the project.

With his decades of experience in the field of agriculture, we are confident that he will make a significant contribution and bring valuable insights to our initiatives.

NMC also warmly welcomed Mr. Karma Thinley back after successfully completing his Pelsung Immersion Program. We look forward to his renewed energy, innovative ideas, and dedication in further strengthening the mushroom community and advancing the mushroom industry in Bhutan.
