A Speaker for a Stronger Parliament

As the National Assembly meets in a special session to elect its new Speaker, two candidates—one from the ruling party and one from the opposition—stand before the House. With the ruling party holding the majority, the outcome may seem predictable.

But this should not be a contest between ruling and opposition. It should be a choice of the most capable, impartial and respected candidate—someone who can strengthen the dignity, independence and reputation of our National Assembly.

Our Constitution provides space for an opposition candidate to serve as Speaker, yet our parliamentary history has never seen that opportunity realised.

Let this election be about the institution, not political sides. May the best candidate serve the Parliament and the people of Bhutan.
