Enabling Net Zero โ€“ Recycling and Coprocessing in Bhutan.

Bhutan is actively prioritizing waste management from all sources and all levels. Based on National Waste Inventory Survey (2019), several activities such as development of Material Recovery Facilities, biogas plants have been initiated.

In this context, a โ€œWorkshop on Co-processing of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and Non-Recyclable Plastic Wastes (NRPW) in Local Cement Industry in Bhutanโ€ was conducted on August 24, 2023, jointly by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resource, Royal Government of Bhutan in collaboration with UNEP India, SINTEF, Norway and Research Triangle Institute (RTI) India, with support of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, Central Pollution Control Board and Royal Norwegian Embassy, New Delhi.

The objective of the workshop was to share best practices from across the world on co-processing including experiences from pilot projects, development of cost-recovery models, and develop capacity of local companies and institutions. Over 40 participants from district administration, municipal administration, waste management companies, cement companies, Royal University of Bhutan, College of Natural Resources, College of Science and Technology, JICA Bhutan office, WWF, along with officials of DECC, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Industry participated in the day long workshop.

As a part of the workshop, a B2B meeting was also organized on Day 2 (August 25, 2023) where private sector companies from India and Bhutan engaged in business discussion to explore collaboration under public-private partnership or other commercial models. During the workshop, a video showcasing the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) concept was also shared to enhance individual awareness and commitment for sustainable lifestyle.

It is expected that the workshop will further enhance G2G and B2B collaboration between India and Bhutan leading to joint projects on waste management.

02 June 2023: Today, as we commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources observed Social Forestry Day alongside the Zero Waste Hour, with support and participation of Hon'ble Lyonpo and Dasho Secretary!

We were delighted to witness active participation from the dedicated staff of our ministry. Together, we carried out a mass plantation drive within our office complex, symbolizing our commitment to environmental conservation. The plantation not only beautifies our surroundings but also contributes to creating a greener and healthier environment for all.

In alignment with our pledge to keep our surroundings clean and free of waste, we also observed the Zero Waste Hour. By embracing the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, we aimed to create a sustainable workplace and inspire others to do the same.

On this special day, let us renew our commitment to environmental stewardship and contribute to a cleaner and healthier planet. Each action we take, no matter how small, can make a significant impact in safeguarding our natural resources and preserving our pristine environment.

Together, let's continue our journey towards a sustainable future, where our forests flourish, waste is minimized, and our planet thrives. By working hand in hand, we can create a better world for ourselves and future generations. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ™
