The National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) is a specialized and scientific autonomous agency established with the approval of Cabinet during its 92nd Lhyengye Zhungtshog (LZ) meeting held December 11, 2015. It is the nodal agency responsible for understanding the behaviors of atmosphere, its interaction with cryosphere and water bodies, the weather and climiate, and distribution of countryโ€™s water resources. The Goals of the Center are:
Goals

1. Improve result-based decision support service for weather incidents and events that threaten lives and livelihoods
2. Enhance climate services to understand and adapt to climate-related risks
3. Develop capacity to provide integrated and coupled monitoring, detection and forecast services to support assessment and management of water resources and water-related hazards
4. Build competence to provide sector-relevant information for socio-economic development, and support development of integrated environmental services to foster healthy communities and ecosystems
5. Sustain highly skilled professional workforce equipped with training, tools and infrastructure to fulfil the mission.

Upon Royal Command of His Majesty The King, Bhutan has contributed INR. 100 million to the Prime Ministerโ€™s Disaster Relief Fund of Nepal in the wake of the devastating floods of 26 August, which resulted in the tragic loss of many lives and widespread damage.

The contribution is a gesture of solidarity and friendship with the Government and people of Nepal at this difficult time and reflects the warm and longstanding relations between Bhutan and
Nepal.

H.E. Maj. Gen. Vetsop Namgyel, Ambassador of Bhutan to Nepal, handed over the cheque to Dr. Surendra Thapa, Charge d' Affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi.

The Royal Government and people of Bhutan extend their deepest sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the disaster. Bhutan stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and conveys its sincere wishes for the swift recovery and rehabilitation of the affected communities.

Monitoring of bench marked glacier (Gangju la glacier) for 2025 - 2026 year.

The Cryosphere Services Division (CSD) under the National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) successfully completed its annual field mission on Gangju La Glacier from 18โ€“31 August 2026.

Located in the headwaters of the Pho Chhu within the Punatsangchhu Basin, Gangju La Glacier is one of Bhutanโ€™s three benchmark glaciers. NCHM has been monitoring Gangju La since 2003, making it an important long-term record of glacier change in Bhutan.

NCHM monitors the glacier through Geodetic glacier mass balance measurement and changes in the terminus position. Every field mission adds another piece to Bhutanโ€™s long-term story of a changing cryosphere. Through continued monitoring of Gangju La, Thana and Shodug glaciers, NCHM is strengthening the scientific evidence needed to understand changes in Bhutanโ€™s glaciers and support climate-resilient planning.

With the aim of strengthening collaboration between media houses and the NCHM in effectively communicating weather and climate information to the public, NCHM, with funding support from the Bhutan for Life (BFL), commenced a three-day workshop on "๐„๐ง๐ก๐š๐ง๐œ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐Œ๐ž๐๐ข๐š ๐’๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐‚๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐–๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐งโ€ ๐จ๐ง ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ– ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”.

The workshop, brings together NCHM professionals and Journalists from various media houses reflecting the growing interest among media professionals in strengthening their understanding of weather and climate reporting.

Over the three days, participants will explore key concepts, terminology, products, and services related to meteorology, climate, hydrology, cryosphere, floods, and other hydro-meteorological hazards. The workshop also provides a platform to discuss the challenges and information needs of the media in communicating scientific information to the public.

The workshop aims to foster stronger collaboration between NCHM and the media and help translate scientific information into clear, timely, understandable, and actionable messages for the public.
