ONLINE PESTICIDE CALCULATOR — A SIMPLE TOOL FOR ACCURATE PESTICIDE USE

The National Plant Protection Centre has developed an online Pesticide Calculator to support agriculture extension officers and other users in making accurate and practical pesticide-use calculations.

The calculator helps users determine:

✅ Pesticide required per sprayer tank
✅ Water requirement per tank and per acre
✅ Number of tanks required for the area to be treated
✅ Number of pesticide bottles to purchase
✅ Estimated pesticide cost per acre and total cost
✅ A quick summary of application requirements

It also provides Pesticide Safety and Mixing Instructions to promote safer handling, preparation, and application of pesticides.

We invite agriculture extension officers and other users to try the calculator and share your comments and suggestions. Your feedback will help NPPC improve the tool and make it more useful and user-friendly.

𝐅𝐀𝐎 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐦𝐲𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐧

The National Plant Protection Centre (NPPC), Department of Agriculture, Royal Government of Bhutan, in collaboration with FAO Bhutan and ARDC Bajo, supported the mission of Dr. Yubak Dhoj GC, Senior Agriculture Officer (Plant Protection), FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO-RAP), held from 17–20 August 2026 under the GCP/RAS/419/JPN-F project.

As part of the mission, Dr. Yubak delivered a presentation on “Strengthening and Modernising Bhutan’s National Plant Protection and Phytosanitary System”, highlighting opportunities to strengthen Bhutan’s plant health system, national capacities and phytosanitary services.

The presentation also covered FAO initiatives on Fall Armyworm mitigation in the Asia and Pacific region, with emphasis on strengthening surveillance, preparedness, technical capacity and sustainable pest management.

The mission included technical discussions with the Department of Agriculture, NPPC and FAO Bhutan, a visit to the National Plant Protection Referral Laboratory, and a field visit to Dapchegang, Guma Gewog, Punakha, where the team engaged with maize farmers and extension officials on Fall Armyworm management and pesticide susceptibility monitoring.

The mission provided an important platform for knowledge sharing, technical exchange and strengthening collaboration.

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞-𝐏𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (𝐁𝐑𝐃)
The National Plant Protection Centre (NPPC), Department of Agriculture (DoA), Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MoAL), in collaboration with the Digital Services Transformation Division, GovTech Agency conducted a three-day Consultation Workshop on the Business Requirements Document (BRD) for the e-Pest System from 4–6 August 2026 at the Four Boutique Hotel, Punakha.

The workshop brought together 19 participants representing the five pilot Dzongkhags, Regional Plant Protection Officers (RPPOs)-ARDCs, NPPC, BA Consultant (GovTech) and GovTech officials.

The consultation sessions focused on refining key business processes, user requirements, system workflows, data elements, reporting mechanisms, user roles, access levels, and integration with existing Department of Agriculture (DoA) digital platforms. The discussions aimed to avoid system duplication, improve data interoperability, and ensure the development of a practical, user-friendly, and sustainable e-Pest System.

Participants reviewed and validated the BRD to ensure that the proposed system effectively addresses the operational requirements of pest surveillance and management stakeholders. The workshop outcomes will provide a foundation for the subsequent phases of system design, development, testing, and implementation.

Once operational, the e-Pest System will significantly strengthen Bhutan’s national pest surveillance and monitoring programme by enabling real-time pest data collection, improving data management and analysis, enhancing early warning and timely advisory services, and supporting evidence-based decision-making for effective and sustainable pest management.

The National Plant Protection Centre (NPPC) would like to notify all Bhutanese companies engaged in the import and supply of Plant Protection Products (PPPs) that all foreign pesticide manufacturing companies associated with their proposed pesticide supplies must be enlisted with the NPPC.

Bhutanese importing companies are required to submit required documents and supporting evidence to the NPPC on behalf of their respective foreign manufacturing companies for the purpose of enlistment.

The National Plant Protection Centre (NPPC) would like to notify all concerned agencies that the indent collection for Plant Protection Products for the Financial Year 2026–2027 will remain open until 14 August 2026.

All agencies are requested to submit their indents through the Plant Protection Products Information Management System (PPPIMS) on or before the deadline.

Please note that the system will automatically close after 14 August 2026, and late submissions will not be accepted. Agencies are therefore encouraged to complete and submit their indents before the closing date to avoid any inconvenience.

Rice Farmers: Watch Out for Hoppers

Brown Planthopper (BPH) and White-backed Planthopper (WBPH) can cause significant damage to rice crops if left unmanaged.

The National Plant Protection Centre (NPPC) hereby issues an Advisory Note outlining practical recommendations for monitoring and managing these pests.

The National Plant Protection Centre (NPPC) is pleased to announce the publication of the Field Guide to W**ds of Rice: Identification, Distribution & Management Practices in Bhutan. Developed under the W**d Science Program, the guide provides practical information on the identification, distribution, ecology, and integrated management of major w**d species associated with rice cultivation in Bhutan. It serves as a useful reference for researchers, extension personnel, students, and farmers.

The publication was authored by Nidup Dorji, Kinley Dema, Kelzang Dawa, and Ugyen Tshering. It was published by the W**d Science Program, NPPC, in 2025.

The National Plant Protection Centre is conducting a three-day Wheat Genomics and Bioinformatics Training Workshop (8-10 June, 2026) to strengthen national capacity in the use of modern genomic and bioinformatics tools for agricultural research and plant health.

Wheat is one of the world’s most important food crops, providing a significant share of the calories and protein consumed globally. Ensuring its productivity and resilience is critical to food security, particularly in the face of climate change, emerging diseases, and growing food demand.

Despite the importance of wheat, very little genomic information is currently available on Bhutanese wheat landraces. These traditional varieties represent valuable genetic resources that may possess unique traits for disease resistance, climate adaptation, and crop improvement. Understanding their genetic diversity is therefore important for both conservation and future breeding efforts.
The workshop provides participants with practical knowledge and skills in genomics and bioinformatics, which are increasingly important for characterizing crop genetic resources, identifying disease-resistance traits, and supporting evidence-based agricultural research. The training will also support future research on Bhutanese wheat landraces and wheat diseases, contributing to stronger national research and plant health systems.

The programme is supported through the WISER Project under International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in collaboration with the John Innes Centre and The Sainsbury Laboratory, United Kingdom. Additional support is provided through the GetGenome (Genomics for All) initiative, the Gates Foundation, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office of the UK government, and the UKRI Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
