𝐀 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠
Today, in another proud day for the Faculty of Postgraduate Medicine, KGUMSB, eleven specialist doctors were awarded their MD degrees. A mix of euphoria and relief, their emotions were palpable. In fact one of them felt it as a cocktail of joy, anxiety, and hope. For the last four years, they have given blood, sweat and tears. Literally and metaphorically.
Their curriculum emphasized value based care, quality improvement, equity, leadership and team work, amongst others. They have absorbed professional language, observed role models, and internalized the rhythms and culture of care. Mastered both the art and science of patient care.
One of the doctors reflected, residency was not just about getting all the answers but also challenging what we think, constructing new knowledge and pushing the limits of her own best practice. An experience worth a thousand pictures, she recounts, thrilling, brutal and humbling. I have tried to learn patient care but patients have taught me how to take care of them. She knows it's a lifelong project, something doctors have explored for eons and continue too. It was about growth, about maturation
Let your legacy be kindness. Let your purpose be service. The Dean reminded. They assured us they will start today, with the next patient.
The president, KGUMSB, offered best wishes for the great challenges and exciting opportunities as 21st century medicine is increasingly aiming to upgrade the healthy, not just aimed to heal the sick.
May their knowledge guide them, their hands comfort their patients, and their integrity define their practice.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 (𝐅𝐨𝐏𝐆𝐌) successfully wrapped up the Quality Improvement (QI) Project Proposal Development Workshop, a key milestone in strengthening the residents’ QI competencies, including teamwork, leadership, science of improvement, and system thinking, to enhance patient care quality and safety across JDWNRH.

Workshop Highlights
𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬: Equipping residents and faculty members with practical skills to design, refine, and implement impactful quality improvement initiatives to address the local quality gap within the existing resources.

𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝: Successful completion of the 2nd phase out of 4 phases in the Total Quality Management (TQM) in Healthcare course, which is adopted from WHO POCQI and BHSQA for the QI curriculum.

𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: FoPGM integrated QI competency in its curriculum in 2018 to meet the global standard as one of the pioneers in the region.

𝐀𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐢 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Now alumni faculty are actively engaged in the training as experienced facilitators.

𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Novice and senior faculty members are also engaged in building their capacity to conduct and coach QI

𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐬: QI works can be published in high-impact scientific journals, and the participants were guided on the process, including ethical requirements

𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬: 15 PG residents and 2 faculty members are now almost ready to apply site clearance to execute their proposals (Phase 3) to drive measurable health service enhancements under the supervision of local QI coaches in the respective departments in JDWNRH.

𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐁𝐁𝐒 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬
FoPGM, KGUMSB is pleased to announce the successful graduation and completion of the internship program for our 28th batch of MBBS interns. This milestone marks the culmination of years of rigorous academic study, intense clinical training, and unwavering commitment to patient care.

22 MBBS graduates, 10 from medical colleges in Sri Lanka and 12 from Bangladesh, joined the MBBS internship program in JDWNRH on 7th July 2025 after an intensive and comprehensive orientation program, including basic and advanced cardiac life support under Druk Sokchop.

Based on the Internship Guideline, they were attached to 15 departments in JDWNRH as well as ERRH and CRRH for 6-12 weeks, and were actively involved, and played vital roles in patient care services in those hospitals as workforce along with their competency-based bedside learning.

As of now, 21 of them were certified as completed for the BQPCA requirement of 12 months, a total of 52 weeks of clinical rotation, based on the decision made by the Internship Academic Committee, which was held on 9th July 2026, following a rigorous review of the competency-based formative assessment records using Workplace-Based Assessment (WPBA).

Including the one who delayed in getting the certificate, as they transition from interns to fully licensed medical professionals, we extend our deepest gratitude for their hard work and dedication. We hope they will uphold the highest standards of the medical profession wherever their careers take them next.

Please join the faculty, staff, and administration in congratulating the 28th batch on this monumental achievement. We wish them the absolute best in their future, and FoPGM warmly welcomes them to join the PG residency programs and any other medical endeavors.

The Faculty of Postgraduate Medicine (FoPGM), KGUMSB, recently organized the Druk Sokchop Bhutan Life Savers’ Courses for our Postgraduate Residency and MBBS Internship Program students at the Centre for Simulation-Based Training (CSBT), KGUMSB, and completed them on 7th July 2026.
This intensive program integrates innovative, simulation-based skills training to elevate clinical excellence across our medical education.
Key Training Highlights:
Targeted Skills: Basic and Advanced life-saving competencies for all age groups
Core Focus: Enhancing communication and teamwork.
Ultimate Goal: Ensuring the highest standards of patient safety.
Our dedicated PG residents and intern doctors underwent rigorous hands-on training in basic and advanced life support. The curriculum was tailored precisely to their clinical relevance, covering:
Neonatal life support
Adult cardiac life support
Pediatric life support
By investing in immersive, real-world simulations, FoPGM continues to empower Bhutan’s next generation of medical specialists and doctors to build the highest level of competencies to save lives and prevent disabilities.

A three-day Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Instructor Training Program was successfully conducted, bringing together healthcare professionals committed to advancing emergency and resuscitation care.

The first two days focused on the Druk Sokchop Bhutan Advanced Life Support Instructor Course, facilitated by master trainers from Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital. The participants included consultants from JDWNRH, senior residents from the Faculty of Postgraduate Medicine, and lecturers from the Faculty of Nursing and Public Health.

The third day focused on the Generic Instructor Course — a key module designed to equip future instructors with the skills required to effectively facilitate and deliver upcoming DS-BALS provider courses.

This initiative represents an important step towards building local capacity, strengthening resuscitation training, and ensuring that more healthcare providers across Bhutan receive high-quality, evidence-based emergency care education.
