In an extraordinary milestone for global public health and animal welfare, Bhutan has been formally validated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for achieving the elimination of dog-mediated human rabies as a public health problem.

The Royal Government of Bhutan is deeply honored to have received a formal letter dated 1 September 2026 from Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, congratulating the nation on this significant achievement. The recognition follows Bhutan's remarkable attainment of zero human deaths from rabies since 2023.

The letter confirms that, based on the rigorous evidence submitted by Bhutan and the recommendation of the External Dossier Review Group convened by the WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia, Bhutan has officially achieved the elimination of dog-mediated human rabies as a public health problem.

This historic achievement is a testament to the visionary leadership, benevolence, and profound compassion of His Majesty The King, whose unwavering guidance has driven Bhutanโ€™s transformative approach to humane dog population management and rabies control. Following the Royal Command, Bhutan implemented the Nationwide Accelerated Dog Population Management and Rabies Control Programme (NADPM & RCP) across all twenty dzongkhags from March 2022 to October 2023. Through this unprecedented national effort, Bhutan achieved 100% sterilisation and vaccinated over 90% of free-roaming dogs against rabies, microchipped and registered 32,544 pet dogs, and initiated the ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ช (native dog) breed development and conservation programme.

The achievement is also a testament to Bhutan's strong multisectoral collaboration and the successful implementation of the One Health approach. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in close partnership with De-suung led nationwide interventions on dog population management and rabies control, while the Ministry of Health ensured the availability of anti-rabies vaccines (ARV) and rabies immunoglobulins (RIG) in all health facilities and strengthened surveillance systems to support timely detection and response.

The coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Health, De-Suung, local governments, regulatory agencies, health workers, field staff, development partners, communities, and the general public have been instrumental in advancing Bhutan's journey towards rabies elimination.

The Ministry of Health extends deepest appreciation to all individuals and agencies who contributed to this historic national achievement. Their dedication, commitment, and collective action demonstrate the strength of Bhutan's whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach under the leadership of His Majesty The King to addressing complex public health and animal welfare challenges.

The Zero Waste Hour campaign, themed โ€œMy Waste, My Responsibility,โ€ was launched by Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen on 2 June 2019 and is observed for one hour on the 2nd day of every month. The initiative promotes responsible waste management, environmental stewardship, and collective action towards a cleaner and healthier Bhutan.

On 2 September 2026, the Ministry of Health, with active participation from DoPH, NMS, BFDA, NCTMS, NTMH, Secretariat, and RCDC, observed Zero Waste Hour through cleaning and waste-management activities in and around their respective workplaces.

Before the activities began, the Dasho Secretary briefed participants on the importance of Zero Waste Hour and reminded everyone of the role each individual plays in taking responsibility for the waste we generate.

The initiative brought officials together to strengthen environmental responsibility, promote clean and healthy workplaces, and contribute to a greener and more sustainable Bhutan.

Bhutan has successfully completed the WHO Independent Mission for Malaria Elimination Certification, conducted from 24โ€“31 August 2026.

The independent mission brought together experts from TAG-MEC, Pre-certification and Certification of Elimination, WHO Headquarters, and the WHO South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO). The mission assessed Bhutanโ€™s progress in sustaining zero indigenous malaria transmission and evaluated the readiness and robustness of the countryโ€™s surveillance and response systems to prevent the re-establishment of malaria transmission.

During the mission, the team reviewed malaria surveillance, diagnosis and case management, laboratory quality assurance, vector control, surveillance data, programme documentation, preparedness and response mechanisms, and conducted field visits to key health facilities and malaria-risk areas.

Bhutan has sustained zero indigenous malaria transmission since November 2021, marking more than four years without locally acquired malaria transmission. The country continues to strengthen surveillance and prevention measures, particularly in areas vulnerable to imported malaria.

The successful completion of this mission is a testament to the strong leadership and commitment, the dedication of our health workers and communities, and the invaluable support of WHO, the Global Fund, and all partners and stakeholders who have contributed to Bhutanโ€™s remarkable journey towards malaria elimination.

We extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the WHO Independent Mission team for their valuable assessment, insights, and guidance, and to all our health workers, communities, and partners whose unwavering commitment and collective efforts have brought Bhutan closer to achieving malaria-free certification.

THIMPHU, BHUTAN - 27 August 2026: The Honโ€™ble Health Minister, Tandin Wangchuk and Ayako Inagaki, Deputy Director General, Asian Development Bank, today officially inaugurated eleven new Mobile Medical Units (MMUs), marking a significant milestone in Bhutanโ€™s efforts to enhance healthcare access across the country.

Procured with financial support of Nu. 248 million under the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded Asia Pacific Vaccine Access Facility (APVAX) project, the MMUs aim to strengthen outreach health services and ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all citizens, particularly those residing in hard-to-reach communities. By bringing medical care directly to communities, the MMUs are expected to improve early diagnosis, treatment, and preventive care, reducing barriers for populations living far from health facilities.

Each Mobile Medical Unit will be staffed by a doctor, a female health worker, a laboratory technician, and a pharmacist. The units will provide a range of services, including screening for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), outpatient consultations, Maternal and Child Healthcare (MCH), Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services, and health advocacy and promotion activities. Additionally, equipped with essential lifesaving medical equipment, these MMUs will also assist in the timely referral and transport of critical patients.

Of the 29 MMUs planned under the project, the current batch of eleven will be deployed to Wangdichoeling Hospital (Bumthang), Phuentsholing Hospital (Chukha), Dagapela Hospital (Dagana), Eastern Regional Referral Hospital (ERRH) (Mongar), Nganglam Hospital (Pemagatshel), Jomotshangkha Hospital (Samdrup Jongkhar), Tashichoeling Hospital (Samtse), Gidakom Hospital (Thimphu), Riserboo Hospital (Trashigang), Trashiyangtse Hospital (Trashiyangtse), and Damphu Hospital (Tsirang).

This latest batch builds on an earlier deployment of ten MMUs launched on 17 March 2026, to Trashigang Hospital, Samtse Hospital, Yebilaptsa Hospital, Wangdue Phodrang Hospital, Haa Hospital, Samdrup Jongkhar Hospital, Trongsa Hospital, Lhuentse Hospital, Pemagatshel Hospital, and the Eastern Regional Referral Hospital in Mongar.

๐Ž๐ง ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ” ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”, Ms. Akayo Inagaki, Deputy Director General, Asian Development Bank (ADB), and Ms. Sonomi Tanaka, Country Director, ADB Bhutan Resident Mission, paid a courtesy call on the Honโ€™ble Health Minister.

The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on the longstanding partnership between the Ministry of Health and ADB and explore opportunities to further strengthen cooperation in ways that are beneficial, impactful and sustainable for Bhutanโ€™s health sector.

ADBโ€™s past support includes the successful implementation of the Health Sector Development Program (HSDP I), which commenced in 2018 and was completed in 2024, with an investment of USD 20 million to support Bhutanโ€™s health sector.
Currently, ADB is supporting the Ministry through the Responsive COVID-19 Vaccines for Recovery Project, under the Asia Pacific Vaccine Access Facility (APVAX), with USD 13 million in financing, comprising a USD 10 million loan and USD 3 million grant from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR).

Building on this partnership, the Ministry of Health and ADB are also working towards HSDP II, with proposed grant support of USD 20 million. The programme will broadly focus on strengthening specialised and tertiary healthcare, developing the health workforce, and further strengthening the Bhutan Health Trust Fund (BHTF).

The Ministry looks forward to deepening this partnership with ADB to advance a stronger, more resilient and sustainable health system for Bhutan.
