Bringing vital healthcare initiatives to the heart of the glacial valleys, a comprehensive health advocacy and sensitization campaign was successfully conducted for the communities of Gangtey and Phobjikha Gewogs on May 28, 2026.

The program focused heavily on breaking down barriers to healthcare by dismantling the stigma and discrimination often associated with HIV/AIDS and STIs. Central to the advocacy was the life-changing U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) message, emphasizing that proper treatment allows individuals to live healthy lives without the risk of transmitting the virus. Alongside awareness, the initiative championed human rights and the strict confidentiality guaranteed to every individual seeking care.

Going beyond dialogue into direct action, the campaign featured an on-site, comprehensive medical clinic. Residents were provided with vital screening and testing services for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis, ensuring early detection and timely intervention right in their home valley.

As Bhutan resolutely drives toward its 95-100-95 Fast-Track targets and EMTCT (Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission) goals by 2030, the active participation and pledges from the community of Gangtey and Phobjikha mark another major stride forward.

Together, ensuring no community is left behind on our journey toward a healthier, more compassionate, and stigma-free Bhutan. ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡น

The External Program Review (EPR) or Joint Monitoring Mission (JMM) of the National Tuberculosis (TB) Control Program was successfully conducted from 24โ€“29 May 2026 in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Global Fund, KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, and the Global Drug Facility (GDF).

The review assessed the progress, achievements, challenges, and overall performance of the National TB Control Program, while identifying opportunities to further strengthen TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care services. Conducted in a hybrid format, the mission included in-person consultations with key stakeholders at the national and subnational levels, field visits to nearby TB reporting centres to assess service delivery and program implementation, and virtual discussions with health professionals from all 32 TB reporting centres across the country. These discussions provided valuable insights into operational challenges, best practices, and opportunities for improving TB services.

The findings and recommendations from the EPR or JMM will inform future strategic planning and program improvements, supporting Bhutanโ€™s efforts to achieve national and global TB targets and accelerate progress toward ending tuberculosis as a public health threat.

A significant milestone was achieved for the 80-bed Royal Centre for Infectious Diseases (RCID) at Gidakom with the formal handing and taking over of medical equipment supplies worth Nu. 274.1 million on 30 May 2026.

Implemented with support from JICA in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the RCID construction commenced on 5 August 2024 under M/s Dai Nippon Construction (DNC), Japan. As part of the project's soft component, Marubeni Protechs Corporation completed the procurement, installation, inspection, and user training for the medical equipment between 29 April and 26 May 2026. The Ministry of Health and Marubeni also conducted a joint inspection on 28 May 2026.

The handover marks an important step towards operationalizing the RCID and strengthening Bhutanโ€™s capacity to respond to infectious diseases.

Reaching the high-altitude communities of Merak and Sakteng, the National HIV, AIDS & STIs Control Program (NACP) under the Department of Public Health, in collaboration with the Trashigang Dzongkhag Health Sector, conducted a health advocacy and sensitization program on May 22 and 24, 2026.

The initiative focused on strengthening health literacy, reducing stigma surrounding HIV and STIs through the U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) message, promoting prevention of NCDs such as hypertension, diabetes, and cervical cancer, and raising awareness on confidentiality and human rights in healthcare.

As part of Bhutanโ€™s journey toward the 95-100-95 Fast-Track targets and EMTCT goals by 2030, local leaders and communities pledged continued advocacy efforts, while a 6-day testing campaign will be conducted from May 30 to June 4, 2026, in Trashigang.

Together, we move toward a healthier and stigma-free Bhutan. ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡น
