South Africa launches Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

President Cyril Ramaphosa officially launched South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) at OR Tambo International Airport on 12 August 2026.

The ETA forms part of South Africa's efforts to modernise it's immigration system, making travel to South Africa easier, faster and more secure, while strengthening border management.

The launch marks an important milestone in South Africa's digital transformation of its visa and immigration processes.

Honourable Thandi Moraka, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, led a South African delegation to the unveiling of the Tombstone Ceremony of the 45 Batswana Nationals who departed to eternal rest during the Mmamatlakala Bus Tragedy accident in 2024, that occured in South Africa. This afternoon, the High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa to Botswana, Ms Thaninga Shope-Soumah paid a farewell courtesy call on the Minister of International Relations, Honourable Dr. Phenyo Butale.

During the discussions, Honourable Dr. Butale applauded the High Commissioner for playing a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral relations between the two sister nations. Honourable Dr. Butale further commended the High Commissioner for a successful tour of duty and wished her the best for her future endeavours.

For her part, High Commissioner Shope-Soumah thanked the Ministry of International Relations for having played a facilitative role during her tour and expressed satisfaction that relations between the two nations are at their strongest and characterised by shared core values.

Botswana and South Africa enjoy strong bilateral relations and deep bonds of friendship underpinned by a shared history and common values.
