SACAA successfully calibrates SSKIA Instrument Landing System
A successful flight calibration of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Sir Seretse Khama international Airport (SSKIA) was conducted as scheduled today by an aircraft of the South African Civil Aviation Authority - SACAA.
The ILS system which is most useful during bad weather or at night is made up of mainly two sub-systems, namely the Localizer and the Glidepath. The Localizer ensures that the aircraft is horizontally aligned with the landing area or Runway, it is capable of telling the Pilot that he/she is left or right of the correct approach track while the Glidepath tells the Pilot that heโs vertically on the correct approach angle or above/below it.
The ILS is calibrated every six months.

Yesterday, a team of Audit experts consisting of local regulators, two South African Civil Aviation Authority inspectors, complemented by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on an observer status, commenced the 10-day audit of the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKIA).
The audit would lead to the certification of the Airport in fulfillment of the ICAO requirements for all airports serving international travel.
Certification will provide airport and aircraft operators with documented proof that the aerodrome they operate in, or use is safe and secure. Additionally, it will act as an important risk management tool to ensure continued safety regularity and efficiency of aircraft Operations at Aerodromes.

He added that, โmandates should not breach conflict of interest, and that the certification process be carried out in a fair and transparent mannerโ.
