CAAB IN GOOD HEALTH AFTER COVID 19

Maun International Airport (MIA) is a viable market for Aviation growth in Botswana particularly looking at the vibrant Tourism industry. This was the sentiments expressed during a meeting of the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana Senior Leadership team with the African Development Bank (AFDB) Transport Executives today.

AFDB delegation of Jean Jacques Nyirubutama, and Aaron Katambula Mwila accompanied by the official of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development met to discuss possible financing and collaboration avenues on the Aviation Infrastructure development. This comes as a follow-up to the 2021 AFDB-sponsored diagnostic study on the Transport sector in Botswana.

Briefing the delegation on the “health” of the Botswana aviation sector, CAAB, Chief Executive Officer, Dr Bao Mosinyi, told the African Development officials about the positive recovery route Botswana has taken to date post-COVID 19.

He shed light on the formation of the CAAB, its structure, the success, opportunities, and challenges.

“We are recovering well post COVID 19. Our Maun International Airport has started making profit with the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport showing positive signs of profitability. Our safety Compliance is one of the highest in the world at more than 80%, surpassing the African and the World average. We successfully certified SSKIA last November and shall be doing the same with Maun”, said Bao.

AFDB Southern Africa Regional Development and Business Delivery Office officials are on a dialogue mission to Botswana on a Public Investment Programme (PIP). For CAAB, the delegation mission was centred on the Strategy and extent of implementation and wanted to know PIP aviation projects readiness, ex*****on, project delivery mechanisms, and financing.

They further expressed interest in linkages between PIP and the Transport sector diagnostic report on Aviation which looked at potential infrastructure development and improvement, and private sector and non-lending support.

The two teams agreed on further dialogue for the development and growth of the aviation sector.

Maun - 11th October 2023, Chief Executive Officer of the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana, Dr Bao Mosinyi called all stakeholders to collaborate and support each other to prepare and respond timely when disasters strike. He was speaking at the closing of the 4-day National Disaster Preparedness Conference hosted by the National Disaster Management Office at the Office of the President.

CAAB was part of the resource organisations at the conference and shared with stakeholders on the expected roles in cases of Aviation disasters. In addition, they were briefed on the Legal requirements and the possible consequences to the lack of robust strategic plans to mitigate aviation accidents and incidents. Stakeholders were drawn from various country District Disaster Committees.

“Our skies are busy, we have a lot of air traffic over our skies, we should, therefore, as a country, be ready that should an aircraft crash over our skies, we should be found to be adequately prepared to respond in time and with adequate resources - our failure to do so, will result in a huge damage to the reputation and image of this country”, warned Dr Mosinyi.

The National Disaster Management office is responsible, for among others, the provision of early warning for approaching disasters, developing and implementing Disaster Risk Reduction Plans, Provision of relief items such as tents and food during disaster.
