Former President Festus Gontebanye Mogae will be buried in Gaborone on Saturday, 16th May 2026, in accordance with his personal wishes, as communicated to family members before his passing.

Mogae, who hailed from Serowe, will be buried at Phomolong Cemetery in Gaborone, a city that defined much of his professional and national service life. Over the decades, he served in several senior government positions based in the capital, eventually leading the country as President from 1998 to 2008.

The decision marks a notable departure from a tradition in Botswana, where former presidents are often buried in their home villages. Botswana’s founding President, Sir Seretse Khama, was buried in Serowe, while his successor, former President Sir Ketumile Masire, was laid to rest in his home village of Kanye.

As part of the memorial schedule, a Book of Condolences will be opened at Parliament in Gaborone from Tuesday the 12th of May until Friday the 15th of May 2026, from 6am to 6pm daily, to allow members of the public to convey messages of condolence to the Mogae family.

The late Former President will lie in state at Parliament on Wednesday the 13th of May 2026 from 6am until 6pm, and members of the public will have an opportunity to view his body.

A memorial service will be held in the capital city on Thursday, followed by a Procession of Honour on Friday.
