Albinism is an inherited genetic defect, so it tends to run in families though it can occur spontaneously as an isolated case. To develop albinism you must inherit an albinism gene from your mother and father. As a result of this recessive mechanism of inheritance, it is possible for two normal pigmented individuals to have some children who have albinism and others who do not have albinism.

In families where there is a history of albinism it is not possible to predict whether a particular pregnancy will result in a child with albinism. It is also equally possible for two individuals who have albinism to have children without albinism.
